Constantly being distracted by the typical 'digitalness' of 'blockies' or other 'artificial-looking' bits can really kill the mood, just like a 'jaggy/harsh' character in many types of digital audio or bad 'chpisets' =( Ever notice on Netflix streamers & others 4 instance how badly they tend 2 handle dark areas, losing detail & trashing gradients? Some vids also have 'jaggies' (a 'blocky' appearance on edges of objects) and noise & unnatural color balance & 2 much stuff stuff 'hidden in the shadows'. No I don't want 'inky blax'. When I'm outside @ night I'm not blind! LOL Flix like the 'Underworld' series R a hillarious example of that = like random heads floating in space (way 2 dark). U can have it so much better = I can fix that 4 U! U'll B Swingin' Like A Set A Groovy Shooz =8^D
The screen capture example above is a 'Jennifer Rush' music video playing on the right in 'frameless mode' using 'Media Player Classic', which is an idea for a player I came up with long ago when seeking a quick & E Z tool 4 playing videos, similar to the old basic 'Windows Media Player' in design but with deeper flexible functionality via sub menus & custom-configurable keyboard shortcuts. Lots of things popular at the time like 'Winamp' and others were and continue to be 'bloatware' with many CPU-hogging troubles. After the original developer I found grew frustrated that Asians were stealing his work & not giving him credit, sum French doodz took it up & added mor features & renamed it 'MPC-HC', 4 'Media Player Classic, Home Cinema'. It's best to have at least two 'MPC' portables with individual shortcuts to them so you can use one with all the 'external filters' switched off for troubleshooting if needed, or simply to quickly bypass all the other goodies 2 C or hear things in their direct 'raw' form 2 compare vs. your preset tweaks & stuff. Although there are amazing advantages to doing it this way instead of using a single basic 'all-in-one' type player, the downside is it is extremely complicated to learn and configure, but that's where I come in to solve that issue =)

With these 3 tools like most software sure you can get all the stuff 'working' within minutes and adjust some settings quickly for a bit of customization, but I've been messing with this stuff for DECADES and always learning something new. It's rather like 'expert mastering engineer' stuff. The feature set is so deep & the ways to combine & organize the 'processing chain' means possibilities are about endless, but for a mere $50 I'm happy to share my 'registry keys' so you can get my best 'Custom Presets' refined from many years of experience to pretty much make anything look & sound much better, like turning DVDs into HD-style vibe, and also leveling the sound in a 'transparent' sort of way so sounds R more comfortable & fun 2 listen 2. Most importantly perhaps is the fact I can custom-tailor the configuration to suit your unique setup for maximum performance.

For instance an important part of my approach is to have things automatically switch between a variety of presets depending on the type of source input, like for example a tiny 'junky-looking' youtube clip would be upsampled to 800 pixels wide & de-noised & tweaked differently than a DVD that is automatically enhanced to 1,600 pixels wide & 'streamlined' for an 'HD' style appearance. The way things are 'gamma curve corrected' and 'warpsharpened' depend on the type of compression used & so on. Really 'dimensions' and 'quality' R 2 entirely different things. A '4K' video could (theoretically) just have ONE pixel of information. It's still '4K' but not using all of them really. This is a trick many sites like U-Boob (Youtube =) use 2 claim they R 'cutting edge' but really most of their 'HD' content looks much WORSE than a good quality DVD (where there is variation also, depending on the release). Also, if you have a big '4K' monitor setup and fancy powerful multi-core CPU PC you may as well take advantage of that and resize to 'native' resolution early in the 'filter chain' for maximum performance 'downstream'. I can of course explain all of that if U R curious =D Notice in the screen capture images below even though they are the same physical size ( = the 'resolution') they look very different (& improved) with tweaks. Now imagine being able to get even 'tiny garbage' clips downloaded from Youtube or wherever to look about as nice. It's really amazing what's possible! Like how galz discover clever waze 2 uze their handz...
You are certainly free to try and do all this 'configuration exploration' of the programs yourself, and with 20 years or so fiddling around you can maybe reach what I have been able to achieve with it, but Y wait & invest that much effort? I've already done all the 'groundwork' & am very smart and have been exploring it for about that long! =:-D It's a bit like playing an instrument, & now I am a true 'FFDShow Virtuoso' (among other things =)) For instance, learning all the subtle ways to 'stack' & rearrange 'processing blocks' for video improvements until with some clips it's really shocking how nice they can be made to look is a very time-consuming process. I find it fun but most people find the 'learning curve' intimidating. I'm talking getting '144p junk' meant for little cell phone screens & approximating an 'SD' (DVD) type vibe, or making DVD style resolution material look HD = WoW! =:-)

Remember: Just because a movie or whatever was made a certain way doesn't mean that's the way you have to watch it. You can make them look pretty much any way you want! =) Of course there is all the 'Calibrate Your Monitor' stuff U can do, but changing things as you go is important too, like adjusting tone controls and equalization on music. It's E Z with FFDShow to recall & store customized presets 4 convenience. Really entertainment is not about having 'what the mastering engineer intended' or an 'artist vision' in a very specific way. People make mistakes, & as our moods & desires change we also like something a little different 2 enjoy, same way it's fun 2 eat different kinds of foods instead of always the same thing. Video creators should intend to please your eyes, so certainly it's about making stuff look how YOU want to see it =8^)
There are literally limitless ways 2 make your stuff different & better, & another neat trick is U can even flip them horizontally very easily 4 a different look, even 'on the fly' with a keyboard shortcut! =D It's a fun way 2 make 'old' videos seem 'new' again, like changing the components or settings in a stereo for a different type of sonic texture to things. With FFDShow & MPC tweex U can make 360p versions look better than online @ 720p! & 720p look better than online @ 1080p, U C ~;-o Here's a bit from around where I live, 'UP-Sampled & tweaked' I Made the original 'fake over-saturated boxy' video look Just Like Reality. Note how the top 'Cinematized' version has a more natural vibe. You can exaggerate colors & stuff for 'Artistic Value' but this was '4 Science' =D Y bother U say? It's like a puzzle game to me ~ a kind of 'sport'. Do YOU have some 'family clips' or something U would like improved? I can do that 4 U or show U how! =) Maybe U even wanna' become a 'Video Enhancement Ninja' yourself. Some people are into video gaming so maybe this is my sort of angle on that = a "How awesome can U make this clip look?" kind of thing. Also a LOT of GR8 stuff I like is not available on DVD or other 'mainstream' sources. 4 instance it's GR8 lots of people have cell phone cameras, but usually the colors & clarity could use help. Ever heard of 'Misket'?
WoW! Asside from the 'jaggies' & stuff reminds me how many fools in the film biz ruin things through extreme types of 'Color DEgrading' = very unnatural tone balance they think adds 'mood', but really 2 much & just annoying. People should instead focus on making stuff look sleek & pretty. This 'Fail-Train' of (unintentional) color 'Grading/DEgrading' in the video example above can B 'repaired' through FFDShow pretty much 2 help restore the Greek-looking chik 2 her natural glory =D I find the A$$ $hake 'round 3:07 to 3:33 GR8 4 fixing the Colors 'kuz U know the dress is White so helps get the rest in Balance easier. In cameras there is often a feature called 'White Balance' which is where U point @ something white so it can match 2 it, so here we "Callibrate The A$$" =)) Gotta' do it by 'Feel' tho' 'kuz got all those random flashy tinted lights hapnin'.
Might say I'm an artist with this stuff. The 'skew' is so severe in the original I learned putting the 'Picture Properties' near last in the 'Filter Chain' helps avoid 'Blockies'. The settings were so extreme & the shadow detail was getting a bit chaotic otherwise. Hoo Nu? ~;D Neet tip: Always 'UpSample' 2 32 bit RGB otherwise when 'warping' things this hard it'll turn 2 a pile of Lego blox kuz tha # of steps in native formats isn't enough 2 maintain smooth transition gradients when stuff like shadows R stretched 2 cover so many more different brightness levels. I've heard about fancy 'color mastering' type apps from 'Black Magic Design' stuff like 'DiVinci Resolve' & all but I only C 3 pixels on my monitors = red, green, & blue, so what else is there 2 tweak? Seems they just claim there's more 2 it 2 $ell Product$ LOL & gamma curve response 2 of course = very important, & FFDShow doz that tew! Nothing is perfect but U can really improve the look! I go 4 natural skin tones & try 2 find a 'pure white' somewhere as reference 2 avoid 2 much 'stray tint' =8^)

So many fun videos R often not available on anywhere besides some '$hitty Online Cell Phone Clip', let alone HD or even SD quality, so knowing how to IMPROVE the look & sound of things opens up 'whole new worlds' of entertainment 2 explore. A noisy '720p so-called HD' thing on U-Boob (Youtube =)) is actually much LOWER resolution than a typical DVD, even though the 'frame size' may B larger, & it's not like U can even go online & find your favorite 'Random Ankara Folk Music From Turkish Nightclubs' on DVD or something, & the quality of the 'direct uploads' is often pretty messed up even @ 1080p or higher! 4 instance I dig this cute 'Hatice' dance clip & 1 of my presets is GR8 4 making her look all smooth & glorious 'HD' style = GR8 'Eye Candy =8^)
I haven't a clue what she's sayin' but seriously I think there's more 'entertainment value' sometimes in a little clip of some genuinely graceful hotties like her shakin' it than a lot of high budget films! ~;^) Beats the frak out of say some Jennifer Lawrence or Angelina Jolie or whatever with all their Bazillion$ 4ever recycling "U don't pay me enough 2 smile" routines = WTF?!? LOL =)) It would B GR8 if they put more sleek galz in movies = so much more fun 2 watch! Like here U can C how a 'HDR/High Dynamic Range' gamma curve brings up shadow detail & makes her look even more dreamy =)

Another important step of course is to use a monitor that's able to give realistic colors & shading in videos & learning how to carefully arrange settings so it can best achieve natural looking results, & that is where I come in also because monitors are all so different it's really a case-by-case thing. I would suggest going with a bright fluorescent backlit LCD type with a glossy screen (not 'frosted' or 'anti-reflective' as those reduce detail & 'vibrance' a lot). Set right they can get 'plasma-like' skin tones & smoothness & all that jazz, but with much lower power requirements & way better reliability & freedom from lots of other flaws, but the drawback is 'vertical view angle' is rather picky = as U move up things get brighter, & vice versa. Even 'modern cutting-edge' stuff like 'IPS' and 'OLED' variants have trouble avoiding simple things like 'screen burn' that should have been left back in the plasma days LOL It's true sometimes technology really goes in REVERSE! I get the feeling it may have been 'designed in' as 'planned obsolescence'? =8^P Whatever you have though I can help you maximize it = FUN FUN! =D Nature is dirty & notihing is perfect! I certainly notice a LOT of the rental movies on Netflix 4 instance R not even available in HD, but they COULD be (with my help = E Z!). This includes lots of 'Old But Popular' TV sows. Think of the potential! =D A great example is the 'Rhoda' sitcom series I picked up at the library out of curiosity. With a bit of fiddling with 'deinterlacing' & other tweaky features like 'noise shaping' & 'color correction' & 'gamma curve customization' & bladee bla I was able to grab a really nice smooth, clean, clear & lush '3D HD' style vibe from it better than it ever looked when originally broadcast. I then started 2 notice something else ~ HAY sheez kinda' Hawt! =)) So many GR8 'Cla$$ic $erie$' like that yea? Think: "Rhoda" or (insert series here) 'Now In HD Blu-Ray Special Edition, Remastered' = YAAAY! =8^D
