What is retinopathy of prematurity?

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, especially those born before 31 weeks of gestation or with a birth weight of less than 1500 grams. ROP occurs when the blood vessels that normally supply the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) stop growing or grow abnormally due to the infant's immature retinal development and exposure to high levels of oxygen.
