Green is one of the richest colors in gemstone specimens. When we think of green gemstones, the first thing that comes to mind is the emerald, one of the top four in the world of gemstones along with the diamond, the ruby and the sapphire … but attention, there are also green sapphires! And if you look around, green diamonds are rarely found.
But there are many green precious stones and today I would like to point out some of them, so that you can see that the color of hope has a long list in the field of gemology.
Emerald
As we said before, the emerald is the green gemstone par excellence. The most famous and coveted are the Colombian emeralds whose green is absent of yellow reflections, its structure has beautiful gardens and its green evokes the jungle, with a wonderful crystallization that helps us recognize that it is an emerald even at a certain distance. The best known come from the Muso mine.
Also, Brazil and Zambia are good producers of emeralds. And let's not forget that in South Africa (Transvaal), in Russia and in Afghanistan there are emeralds of good gem quality, an essential quality to be able to wear them in a jewel. Some of the most popular:
- Socoto Emerald
- Zambian Emerald
- Transvaal Emerald
Peridot
Peridot was even confused with emerald in ancient times, when knowledge of crystalline minerals was not sufficiently advanced to allow humans to identify the differences. Peridot is a wonderful gemstone, as its green color carries with it strong golden-yellow reflections that make it extremely attractive. It is also a very noble gem with a long tradition in the history of jewelry. Kashmir peridot is particularly prized, as are specimens arriving from Manchuria. America (Arizona) and Egypt (Zabargad ) are also good quality producers of peridot.
diopside
Diopside is another precious stone with an intense green color, in this case we have a crystalline stone that shows a shade of dark green, intense, but that is closer to olive green. It does not have blue reflections and owes its color to chrome, like many other green gemstones that I will mention below. The most coveted of the diopsides comes from Russia, from a region in the heart of Siberia, in an area called Jacuzia, where winter temperatures are among the lowest on the planet. It is a gem that had a "revival"after the fall of the Berlin wall and today essential in the great collections of important brands.
Tsavorite
The queen of garnets, tsavorite is a gem of extraordinary beauty. Unfortunately, it is not easily found in large dimensions. It is a gem discovered in the sixties of the last century in Tanzania and until today extracted mainly in that country and in neighboring Kenya. Its structure shows an unusual brightness and its color is intense green.
tourmaline
We find different specimens of green tourmalines, which represent the entire palette of shades of that color. Chrome tourmalines show a beautiful deep, clear jungle green. Africa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Namibia offers us a wide range of beautiful tourmalines.
The other great producer of tourmalines is undoubtedly Brazil, with prestigious specimens such as:
- Santa Rosa Tourmalines
- Tourmalines Pyrenees
- Toad Tourmalines
- Tourmalines Itatiaia
- Mint Tourmalines
Hope Fluorite
It is a green variety of fluorite, with fascinating bluish reflections. Completely transparent and without inclusions to the naked eye, it is not unusual to access specimens over five carats! …and the good news is that even large gems are accessible. It is a precious stone that attracts all eyes due to its stupendous crystallization. Of superior quality are the specimens that come from Argentina, in the "La Toma" area.
chrome apatite
This is another green colored gem with spectacular brilliance and absolutely clean. As its name indicates, chrome apatite owes its color to this mineral, a clear, crisp green that evokes ivy leaves. Although not very well known, it is slowly establishing itself in jewelry thanks to its attractive appearance.
Prehnite
It is a water green gem and its particularity is that it seems to have its own inner light. It is a very interesting gemstone. My personal experience is that it never goes unnoticed. I always find someone who admires my prehnite earrings and wants to know more about the gem, such is its attractiveness and its original appearance.
Green jade is one of the most coveted gems on the market. High quality, jungle green jadeite is one of the key gemstones in Chinese culture, and of course ubiquitous in Far Eastern jewelry making.
Court ladies of ancient Chinese dynasties were the only ones allowed to wear jade objects and jewelry.
Malachite
It is the quintessential opaque green gemstone. It presents in the same gem different shades of green. This is due to the fact that its formation consists of the solidification of different layers of sedimentary liquids rich in copper residues over thousands of years. Copper undergoes oxidation in a different way in each stratum and this is the reason for the difference in shade of green.
Highly appreciated in ethnic silver jewelry.
color changing stones
You have seen that in our collections we also offer precious stones capable of changing color, depending on the light under which they are observed. In some cases, one of the colors of these gems is green. As is the case with alexandrite. In natural light this gem shows a bluish- green color, which under artificial light turns purplish red. In the case of zultanite, it is a kiwi green that with the change of light turns into a champagne-peach hue.
But there are still some that have not been named, such as the Kiwi topaz, or the green andesine and some others:
- green chalcedony
- Ouro Verde Quartz
- Jade Quartz olive
- emeralds
- Diopside from Russia
- Prehnite
- green tourmaline
- Manchu Peridot
- Green Fluorapatite
