COMP516: AI in forest management

Hi, everyone! Thanks for taking an interest in the project.

This project is inspired by the recent COP26 climate conference and the urgent need to protect the world's forests. I've done some background research and found several papers explaining how AI and machine learning can be used as a tool to protect forests, whether it's by predicting harmful algal blooms or diseases, or by predicting the mortality of trees in the wake of deforestation or climate events.

I've suggested this project to the TAs during a lab session and they said it was suitable and original topic. I've looked through the list of previous projects and I can't find anything similar.

My initial thought is that this project is suited to the teaching/communicating type because it's quite niche and I think it would be more engaging to deliver a lecture-style presentation rather than a review, however, I'm open to changing this if needs be. I'm open to any and all suggestions for how the project could be improved!

My background is in Cognitive Science and I have experience producing teaching materials and writing literature reviews. I'm more than happy to be part of the team that delivers the lecture/presentation as I'm based in Liverpool. I'm not an ecologist, just someone with a passion for environmentalism!

If you'd like to get involved please drop me a message (TAHIR, Kamran on Teams) or add your name to the spreadsheet. People from all backgrounds and disciplines are welcome!
