Are you confused and not able to decide which type of shackle to choose? Don’t worry, in this article, we are going to jot down the difference between the two most widely used shackles. Namely, Anchor shackle/ Bow shackle and Chain shackle/D shackle.

Anchor shackle/ Bow shackle/ Bolt type bow shackle

Bolt type bow shackle is also known as Anchor shackle or Bow shackle

It has a larger and more defined “o” shaped bow area.

Having a larger bow, these shackles can be loaded in many directions as well as sideloaded and used for connecting multiple sling legs

 

Chain shackle/ D shackle/ Bolt-type D-shackle

Bolt-type D-shackle is also known as Chain shackle or D shackle

D shaped bow is comparatively narrower than the anchor shackle.

Having a smaller loop area, it can take a high load in a line

Designed for in-line tension, they should not be sideloaded.

While using, the centerline of the load should coincide with the centerline of the shackle

 

 Using shackles safely

Always

  • Store and handle shackles correctly.
  • Inspect shackles before use and before placing into storage.
  • Select the correct pattern of shackle and pin for the application.
  • Allow for the full resultant imposed load. • Fully tighten the pin.
  • Ensure the load acts through the centre line of the shackle using spacers if necessary to meet this requirement.

 Never

  • Use shackles with bent pins or deformed bodies.
  • Force, hammer or wedge shackles into position.
  • Eccentrically load shackles.
  • Replace the pin with a bolt.
  • Fit pins in contact with moving parts that may loosen or unscrew them.
  • Shock load shackles

Inspection and maintenance

Maintenance requirements are not much but it is mandatory to inspect the slings before use.

 Keep shackles clean, the threads free of debris and protect from corrosion.

While inspection, if you find the shackles to be distorted, damaged, having cracks, corrosion or any other defects immediately take it to a competent person.
