Bajirao Mastani was released on 18th December 2015. It is one of the best works of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and he went on to win the National Film Awards for Best Director. A story of a Maratha king – Bajirao and a Rajput princess – Mastani that the current generation was unaware of was unfolded on screen. In a true SLB style, the film set was no less than a wonderland. Be it Audiography or choreography, music, or performances on screen – the research that Bhansali and his team did was evident from the end result.

It is one of the highest-grossing Indian cinema ever and also one of the most expensive Bollywood movies. The effect Bajirao Mastani had on its admirers is inexplicable and it is referred to as a modern classic. Here are the reasons why Bajirao Mastani will always remain a classic: -

Well-knit story

There were a few historians who were actively pointing out that this epic historical romance is filled with inaccuracies. But the truth is Bajirao Mastani is a well-made movie with zero dull moments. It presented a well-knit story of a brave warrior, his passionate love for Mastani that dares to look beyond religion, and his subsequent fall. The director didn’t miss the important aspect of his life.

Smart and sensible direction

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a man of perfection. He wouldn’t miss a single frame and detail. In one of the “BTS” tales, it was shared that while filming the song Pinga it took long hours and the diyas lit up at the beginning extinguished. Someone suggested taking care of that in post-production but made people run around the set with candles because he wants that kind of light only. He is someone who believes more in quality and that can be achieved only through hard work. All that hard work was translated on screen.

Dedicated actors

Ranveer Singh playing Bajirao shaved his head and put on a slight weight. Priyanka Chopra coached herself with the exact Marathi dialect spoken in that era. Deepika Padukone learnt sword-fighting. Everyone carrying out the lead roles underwent many challenges internally and externally and that beautifully melted on screen in their characterization. Also, the supporting cast were strong and that added a lot of intensity to this movie.

Cinematography

It was Sudeep Chatterjee who did the cinematography for Bajirao Mastani. Remember the whole frame when Mastani walks in to perform mohe rang do laal? There was a smell of victory and friendship in the air, the sky was red, yellow, and violet at the time of sunset, there were fountains everywhere, and there walks in Mastani in her white lehenga-choli and took our breath away. The fight scenes or those long shots – every frame were beautiful!
