Woodturning is maybe among the most artistic of the timber crafting family of skills. That is not to say that woodworking; or wood carving is not artistic. They can, in actuality, be very artistic. Look at a Sam Maloof chair's sculpted lines, or the graceful design of wood carving and a Craftsman table is art by definition. What sets woodturning apart is that the basic tool of the transaction, the lathe.

Woodworkers employ any of a considerable variety of power and hand tools to make tables, chairs, bookcases, boxes, etc.. The number of resources makes the possibilities endless. Fewer resources are used by wood carvers but still have a large selection from which to pick. These can include chisels and mallets, handsaws, bandsaws chainsaws, routers, and tools.

Woodturning, on the other hand, is limited to a single power tool, the lathe and a selection of hand tools. The lathe simply rotates the block, or period of wood and is to the instrument held by the woodturner. So, what's so creative about standing in one place with a sharp instrument while the lathe does all the hard work of turning the timber? If you have ever seen a wooden vase, or a cowboy hat in the window of a gallery you might get an inkling of what makes woodturning so special.

The majority of us see wood jobs turned in our day. We see the turned legs of a poster bed, turned spindles turned baseball bats. We don't think since they are so ubiquitous and we guess, and that most of these are turned by automated lathes. The closest we get to a lot original and interesting is a turned salad bowl. (That is assuming you have something aside from the pressed kind you get at a restaurant.)

To have a sense of the possibilities of artistic woodturning go looking in the windows of higher end gift shops and art galleries and we will need to step out a little bit. Here we might begin to see the flipped candlesticks and goblets which will make us believing that there just might be something to this woodturning enterprise. Woodturners frequently use chunks of wood that a woodworker would discover unsuitable. Rude Osolink has been a master and an inspiration. His pieces are in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and among his bowls was really presented to the Queen of England by the US Government!

For as amazing as woodturning can be, it's actually not hard to get started. Consider it the principles are yet and simple to learn, even a kid can play. A true chess master functions a lifetime at his craft. To start, you just require a lathe and a few chisels. Furthermore, lathes come in a wide range of sizes you can find one to fit even the smallest space. Of course, you won't be turning a bowl on a small lathe!
