Although car maintenance can be done year round, it becomes particularly important during the change of seasons and changes in road conditions. Here are 5 tips for keeping your vehicle and yourself safe during cooler months.

1. Tires: Your tires will change according to the seasons. This is why seasonal preventive vehicle maintenance is so important. You can either roll on all-seasons to the snow and ice, or rotate between summer and winter tires depending upon the weather. It is important that you have help changing back and forth, as well as making sure that everything aligns evenly for safe and smooth driving.

It's more than just changing your tire. As the summer ends, fall begins and winter arrives, it is important to maintain your tires. Regular maintenance for your tires is also required, including alignment and rotation. Over time, your tires' tread will begin to wear, usually on one or both sides. This can make driving uneven and difficult. Regularly rotating your tires will help ensure a smoother ride and a longer life for your tires.

2. Oil Change: As you can see, there is a tendency for your vehicle to accumulate more debris and dirt in the spring and summer. You should get your oil changed during hot seasons. The impact of rain, insects, dry roads and other environmental factors on the health of your vehicle are all more severe in these warmer months. Over time, oil can build up and cause damage to your engine. Your car's oils will start to get clumpy over time. It is recommended that you have an oil change once every 6 months or 10,000 kms.

3. Brake Inspection - The brakes' stopping power is affected by snow and ice, making it a good time for a brake inspection. Your mechanic will check the caliper (rotor), drum, and pads. Now is the perfect time to get your brake pads changed. Install the pads and ensure your car comes to a complete stop when it is time for break. You'll be happy you did, even if the roads are slick.

4. Heating and Air Conditioning: Temperature regulation is essential when it changes. You should have your heating and air conditioning checked as the seasons change. Your mechanic will conduct a visual inspection of your vehicle, look for leaks or problems in fluids and vents, then make minor repairs to ensure that your vehicle stays warm and comfortable during the winter.

5. Tune-Up: Are you unsure which area of your vehicle needs the most work? A tune up is a great option to calm your nerves before the seasons change. Your mechanic will examine your vehicle and look for possible problems. There's no single standard for tune-ups. The scope of work varies from shop and shop. Glenn’s Auto Repair focuses on catching any problem early so you don’t have worries later.
