What I did with a $3 dollar guitar...
Click for long and winding road...($3)
Back in 2005, marital separation left me Homeless.
Living at City Mission (Buffalo, NY)
I found a job bussing tables, and
I could afford a room.
Not having any musical instruments,
I found a damaged 3/4 size guitar.
I reglued the bridge with epoxy,
and filed the frets, nut, and saddle.
I had to buy a g-string, it was broken.
I tuned it with the help of a tiny keyboard, and adjusted the intonation.
The fretboard was rather short,
so I built a fretboard extension
out of glued-up craft sticks.
I dyed the top and bottom layers
black, with a marker.
I invented a way to use paperclips
as frets, anchoring them at each
end with L-bends into paperclip-drilled
holes in the top and side of the
fretboard.
I matched the position of the frets
by ear, and superglued them along
their length, as well as in the socket
holes.
The frets played cleanly and accurately, giving five more note
positions on the fretboard, reaching
high C.
I sealed the extension with
superglue, and sanded it with
automotive wet-and-dry sandpaper.
I had to abandon it when winter weather
slowed the cafe business, and I couldn't
pay for my room. I went back to the City Mission, leaving all my things in my
Pearl Street Homeless Hotel Room.
Bullies were now rampant at the Mission,
so I walked 8 miles to my Mom's house,
and helped set up the Christmas Tree.
She exiled me to Arcade in July,
where I stayed until September.
My friend Dave Clabeaux visited a couple times, he remarked : "You're all right ! "
"You know how I can tell ? You take care of yourself, and the place is CLEAN !"
My family came out once, for the Church Picnic.
The Cottage was in perfect order.
They left without saying goodbye ...
Huh.
I had to leave all my things in Arcade,
Yamaha Guitar, 2 Mandolins, Keyboards,
TV's, Tools,
Clothing, Books, Notes, and HP Win95
Computer, when an early snow storm threatened.
I rode my $10 3-Speed (with dropped handlebars, AM/**FM radio, and racing seat)
back to Buffalo, just before the storm
downed trees with a foot of wet snow.
My locked bike was stolen from City Mission.
I saw my old Ford Tempo in the lot,
with different plates ...
I guess Mom didn't give it to Luke or Andrew,
as I had suggested...
