A chemical pregnancy, also known as a biochemical pregnancy, is a loss of a pregnancy that occurs within five weeks after implantation. Many women who experience a chemical pregnancy are unaware that they have conceived since the only indicator is late menstruation.

During a chemical pregnancy, the body generates enough hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to provide a positive pregnancy test at first. However, at this early stage, an ultrasound scan cannot identify the pregnancy, implantation will eventually fail and serum hCG levels will decline.
