Ladened with lagoons and consistent seasonal wind, Kalpitiya's a well-known destination in the kitesurfing world. There are two wind seasons in Sri Lanka: summer and winter. Bentota is another beach on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka that offers great windsurfing and kitesurfing opportunities. Only 25 minutes by boat from Kalpitiya, the dream spot is located on the Dutch bay”, where the wind is very steady.

If you have to rent your kite equipment or you take some lessons, kiteschools usually starting working at 10 am and work till 5 pm. After 5 pm, the Kalpitiya lagoon should be only used by the local fisherman, but you can still continue riding in the indian ocean.

Working on new tricks, cruising between spots, or just riding with mates for encouragement, the Kalpitya Lagoon pretty much has it all from a freestyle perspective. The lagoon is smaller though and is full when 10-15 kiteboarders ride at the same time. It's free to kite every where in Sri Lanka.

It sits just in front of Kitesurfing Lanka and Blue Whale Resort, which is perfect if you are staying there. And, in the winter season, if we're really lucky, we'll be able to kite with the dolphins. In contrast to what many people think, Vella Island is an amazing spot even in winter time: extra-flat water and very constant wind from the northeast.
