They go by a dozen different names, but they all mean the same thing: ultimate fun! Bounce houses have been a common addition to birthday parties, concerts, and every other indoor or outdoor event since 1959. These party delights have traveled across the world, keeping millions of children amused and happy for hours.
How did such a brilliant idea come to be? Bouncy House history is, predictably, all smiles. It all began in 1959 in Shreveport, Louisiana. There was John Scurlock, a NASA Engineer who was applying mathematical principles to plastic materials.
John's creative nature took over, and he became an inventor, making and distributing items such as inflatable flags, tents, and domes, as well as an air cushion to safely catch people from high falls. According to the story, Scurlock glanced up one day while researching prototype inflatable tennis covers and saw his squad "bouncing" up and down on his experimental tennis court covers, giggling and having fun. The rest, as they claim, is history, as children soon embraced the concept. And Scurlock did not disappoint when he adapted this idea to entertain youngsters. Scurlock advanced the friendly trend by inventing catchy names for the bounce houses. During the late 1960s, when these pressurised inflatable enclosures were appearing at corporate picnics, school fairs, and kid's birthday parties, some of the first jump houses were dubbed "Space Walk" and "Inflatable Zoo." Frank, John's son, pioneered the growth of the bounce house rental industry, introducing these portable pockets of fun to towns throughout the United States. Frank has created more robust buildings as well as water slides.
Meanwhile, bouncy house makers got on board, and this modern enclosed "inflatable trampoline" was publicly unveiled in popular America and at different locations.
Photos of children bouncing in inflatable homes, for example, can be seen all over Europe, South America, and even China.
