More brides-to-be are choosing lab-grown diamonds as an alternative to classic mined diamonds as they gain in popularity. Both lab-grown and mined diamonds are proudly available at Class A! Due to their recent development and lack of familiarity, many people still have their doubts regarding lab-grown diamonds. In order to avoid confusion with other gemstones like cubic zirconia or moissanite, it is crucial to emphasise that lab-grown diamonds are genuine diamonds and not diamond imitations. Are you curious to know more about the differences between diamonds that are mined and lab-grown? The definitive manual is here.

CREATION

Diamonds that are mined come from nature. These magnificent stones are the result of billions of years of extremely high heat and pressure. So how on earth could a lab replicate this? These valuable stones are produced in a high-tech factory rather than a true "lab." One of two processes—"high pressure, high temperature" or "chemical vapour deposition"—is used to manufacture them. "High pressure, high temperature" imitates the environment in which diamonds are naturally formed by using tremendous pressure and temperature. In contrast, "chemical vapour deposition," which is similar to 3D printing, uses energised vapours to deposit diamonds in a vacuum chamber, much like a microwave. Both processes begin the formation of a diamond with a tiny fragment, or "seed," of another diamond. Only a few weeks will pass before a diamond is produced! This creation technique allows for the management of variables that would ordinarily effect mined diamonds, resulting in the production of more diamonds of excellent grade.

Between lab-grown and naturally mined diamonds, there is barely any chemical difference. While lab-grown diamonds are entirely carbon, mined diamonds frequently contain a small amount of nitrogen. Despite this distinction, lab-grown diamonds are still genuine gemstones. Both lab-grown and mined diamonds rank a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making them equally durable and powerful. It is nearly impossible for jewellers and gemmologists to distinguish between a mined and a lab-created diamond with the naked eye. However, a gemmologist may be able to recognise a lab-created diamond with the aid of specialised tools.

PRICE

Lab-grown diamonds are substantially less expensive than those obtained from mining. Since all of the world's mined diamonds have previously been produced over billions of years, the supply of mined diamonds is constrained. The value of mined diamonds rises due to their limited availability. However, there is no supply limit with lab-grown diamonds, which lowers the price.
