The Growing Importance of Breaking News

Breaking news, commonly termed as late-breaking news or evening news or special feature or news segment, is an important current issue which many broadcasters feel warrants the immediate suspension of live programming or ongoing news on certain key issues. For example, it might be a breaking story about the latest developments in the war in Iraq. It could also be news about a fatal road accident in India or the latest development in the Indian Ocean oil spill. A large number of television channels have started telecasting live videos taken by cameras of natural calamities such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and landslides. The images are often picked up by viewers and distributed across various media, including news channels, on the Internet and on TV channels and satellite TV networks.

A viewer would be surprised to note that a large number of news channels have changed their entire channel selection to carry this type of content. The very presence of breaking news in these channels is often enough to halt a program, especially one meant for news buff. It's not just news that is being telecasted live; often, there is coverage of events that are breaking and which are being covered extensively, either by the newspaper or by a nightly news show. Often, these telecasts would be interrupted mid-air by news related shows, like Late Night.

So what is happening when it comes to breaking news? Well, in India, where the country has been in the grip of a major political crisis since last year, the state has been particularly busy with the phenomenon of ongoing news coverage. This is perhaps the largest single story in a state that has been affecting television audiences in this country since the inception of the first channel dedicated to news and current affairs. As expected, the channel has faced tremendous viewership losses in the recent times and is yet to recover.

Similarly, in the United States, many news channels have opted to skip breaking news completely in favor of their prime time programming. Many news channels have moved to a one-hour news show format, while many others have chosen to move to a nightly news story. The only consistent story that many of the world's leading news channels are reporting in both these formats is that of local or regional news. In other words, most news channels are simply giving us another channel dedicated to providing breaking news reports.

Of course, some news networks are taking this issue into account, and broadcasting live video from any place that is involved in the story. There have been some notable successes here, with networks like CNN and Fox News successfully covering live breaking news stories. However, these networks do at least have the advantage of not being forced to put their own reporters on the air to get the footage. There are many instances in which a breaking news story happens to be on television around the same time as another story, but these outlets can simply move the broadcast dates to accommodate the breaking news report.

For instance, a major story on Fox News was originally set to air during the NFL Sunday Ticket show, but when that show ended without advance warning, Fox News moved the breaking news segment to the top spot in their lineup. This allowed them to run the report during that show, without having to worry about their competitors showing up to air without any lead time.

This method of breaking news works well for the media, but does it have any value for the average person? Does it help me understand the news event in question better, so that I can more easily know when something is going to happen? Many people who are not regular news readers would likely say "no", but technology has made it incredibly easy to know immediately whether something is going to happen. Most people now carry a Smartphone, or at least use one frequently, and that means that they can easily know when something is going to happen.

Even when there is no breaking news coverage, people can still use a smart phone or smart watch to get the latest weather coverage. People can log on to their best news website  and get the live score from the moment that they open their app. They can even view their local weather maps and track rainfall or wind speeds on the fly. There are even apps that allow you to see your regional weather maps so that you can track severe weather as soon as it happens. These features allow people to stay on top of any weather events that they may be interested in.

Breaking news on television offers regular programming like nightly news and breaking news reports, but there are also apps available for cable TV viewers that will allow them to access breaking local news. Not only do the apps provide local coverage, but they also often provide international coverage as well. Cable TV viewers who want to keep up with the rest of the world can do so by tuning into a variety of channels that offer global coverage through news channels and YouTube. From BBC World to CNN internationally, these news channels on cable TV offer a variety of reporting that keeps viewers engaged. Breaking news on your Smartphone or smart watch makes it easier than ever to keep up with the local scene. For more information please: Visit here
