Animation refers to any technique that makes static objects and images move. These types are not mutually exclusive. While most motion graphics are made with CGI, hand-drawn motion graphics could be possible.
Motion graphics are distinguished from other types, at least in marketing whiteboard animation software videos, by their content. Motion graphics are often associated with moving text, abstract objects, and other graphic elements. A motion graphic is an animation that brings to life a graph or infographic using movement.
Animation, as an art form, focuses on storytelling and cinematic effects to tell a story. You can think of it this way: A video that sets motion graphics in motion to illustrate an idea would be called motion graphics. It's more likely that your video contains a human figure who is on an emotional journey.

How do you define animation?

Animation is more costly. Motion graphics are typically easier to produce. This is a more simple form of animation. Expect to invest more when you start looking at photorealistic CGI (hand-drawn or painted artwork), and stop-motion technologies.
What skills does a motion graphic designer need?
We asked motion graphic designers to discuss the most importantly soft and technical skills that they have for their jobs.
3-D modeling
Joseph says that both calligraphy (and 2-D art) still have their places. Joseph explains, "But most motion graphics are now based upon 3-D modeling, which is a huge portion of the future of graphics." Joseph explains, that 3-D modeling allows you to understand points in 3-D space, connect those points and create polygons out of those lines.
Animation perspective
Joseph says that a good 3-D designer can understand motion and timelines. "Objects are capable of moving. Also, light sources can move. The view of an audience is also possible to move, including the camera. The designer can choreograph complex movements one by one and spin them off in multiple directions.
Organization
Andres believes that organization is important for both freelancers AND team members. Andres notes that it becomes more important to have a well-organized file with assets, dependencies, layers, and other information, the larger the projects become.
Avola notes that "organization and multi-tasking" are two of the most important attributes we seek in motion designers. "You'll have to manage many layers or elements simultaneously. If you don't maintain your files well, you'll be paying the price.
Procedural Animation
Motion graphics is a time-intensive process that can pose a challenge. Procedural animating is one way of reducing that.
Avola says that the word "procedural", has seen a rise in popularity over recent years. The trend is likely to grow exponentially in the coming decade. "Through simple and complex algorithms, procedurally-generated, full animations can be created in a fraction of the time. Automated processes make it possible to tweak, modify and revise your work quickly.
Avola says that motion design software is using scripts, expressions, code, and coding to reduce time. In procedural animation, designers can apply predetermined physics to 3D objects. When two objects collide in animation at the same speed, the results of that collision are predictable and can therefore be modeled accurately.
Texturing and lighting effects
Joseph asserts that the model doesn't exist, but the audience can see the shapes and the images. Joseph stresses that 3D graphics should look photo-realistic through surfacing. "Surfaces may be reflective, shiny or transparent, translucent, rough, opaque, or refractive. They can also display moving images and simulate textures. There is no limit to their potential.
Understanding big-picture context
Joseph says that a good designer will know what their designs are used for. He stresses the importance of video, multi-media, game design, and virtual realities as all possible destinations for motion graphics professionals. Each application will require a different approach. "Understand each of these applications, and how to plan."
Adaptability
Avola explains that plans change as well as project scope and goals. She also states that skilled motion designers have to be open to changing their original vision to accommodate client feedback. Keep humble and be open to learning from the unexpected.
Timing
Avola states that timing is an essential skill for any motion graphics designer. "Motion design is a very story-driven instrument. The best stories contain a natural rhythm and flow."
An amazingly detailed graphic can be rendered useless if it doesn't flow with the rest of the elements, such as sound. The best animators, motion designers, and motion designers know how to adapt their work and include rhythm and pacing.
