Checklist for Students Going Abroad – Australia Travel Essentials/Study Abroad Packing List

Going to university means having a new home far from home. There are so many things to take care of and you don’t know where to start! Armed with this comprehensive guide that we have compiled, you do not have to worry about leaving anything important behind. Start university well-prepared and with your best foot forward!

Clothing Checklist for Study Abroad:
Australian summers can be brutal! Make sure you carry clothes you are comfortable in and leave behind the clothes from the bottom of your closet that you know you won’t be wearing. Check with your program to see whether it has any specific dress-code requirements. Try and carry versatile items that can be combined with multiple pieces in your wardrobe to make comfortable and appropriate outfits, ranging from business clothing to Sunday-brunch wear! Also, don’t bother increasing your luggage weight by packing clothes that are not appropriate for the season — you can always buy them online or locally. Here is a list of essentials:

1.Underwear (To last at least a week — mid-week laundry is not fun!))

2. Tops of your choice (At least 3-4):

This could include:

1.T-shirts (Long-sleeved/Short-sleeved)

2. Tops (Appropriate for a party or a night-in!))

3. Shirts

  • Bottoms (At least 3)

This could include:

1.Formal trousers (for that business meeting or job interview)
2.Jeans
3.Shorts
4.Skirts

  • Jacket (At least 1, preferably water resistant)
  • 2 Professional outfits
  • 1 Workout outfit + Swimwear to enjoy Australia’s gorgeous beaches
  • 2 pairs of pyjamas
  • Shoes:

1.Flip flops (At least one pair for hostel showers)
2.Comfortable sandals (For going out)
3.Sneakers
4.Dress shoes/Boots

  • Accessories:

1.Belts
2.Socks
3.Small purse/Backpack for when you go out

  • Sweaters/Sweatshirt/Hoodie (2-3)
  • Coat
  • Gloves/Scarves/Other winter accessories

Toiletries Checklist for Study Abroad:

Remember to carry toiletries, especially liquids, according to airline travel guidelines. You can use your discretion to buy many of these once you reach instead of carrying them with you. Here is the list:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Trust us, Australian summers are no joke!
  • Razors + Your shaving supplies
  • Makeup
  • Contact lenses + Glasses (You could carry the prescription for convenience, too)
  • Contact lens solution (Remember to pack it well)
  • Shampoo + Conditioner
  • Soap (Shower gel is easier to use in hostels)
  • Feminine products (One month’s worth)
  • Comb
  • Medications required (With the prescription)
  • Over-the-counter medicines
  • Tissues

Electrical Devices Checklist for Study Abroad:

Australia uses Type I power plugs. Therefore, there is a high chance your devices bought in India will need a travel adapter to function. It is also a good idea to buy these in Australia, if possible. Avoid carrying unnecessary electrical devices and appliances. The list of essentials is as follows:

  • Cell phone (With a functioning international SIM card or international plan on your existing SIM card) + Charger
  • Laptop + Charger (Might need a travel adapter)
  • Headphones – It is nice to have a good pair that cancels out the sound
  • Power strip with converter

Documents Checklist for Study Abroad:

Always carry your documents with you when traveling. It is also a good idea to keep a scanned copy on your phone or laptop. Check their validity at least once before packing them. Here is a list of essential documents:

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Plane tickets
  • ISIC Card + Student ID (If available)
  • Travel and medical insurance
  • At least 2 photocopies of important ID proofs
  • Your official letter of acceptance (Might be required to open a new bank account)
  • At least $100 in local currency + ATM/Credit Cards
  • Other important certificates you might need

Utilities Checklist for Study Abroad:

A lot of these can be bought once you reach. However, it’s never a bad idea to have a list on-hand. Here is a list of things that will make your stay at your university convenient:

  • Pillow (At least 1. Also check if these are provided with accommodation.)
  • Pillowcases (At least 2)
  • Bedsheets (At least 2)
  • Comforter/Blanket
  • Towels (At least 2)
  • Bathrobe (If washrooms are at a distance from your room)
  • Hangers (Wardrobe organisers are also a good option)
  • Water Bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Journal
  • Stationery
  • Watch
  • Flash drive
  • Laundry Bag (Check laundry facilities.)

That seems to be the end of our comprehensive list. However, with so many important things to carry, remember to choose baggage that is sturdy, secure and safe. You shouldn’t be struggling to heave it around and be mindful about airline baggage limits so you don’t end up paying extra! As we mentioned before, it helps to buy what you can once you arrive. We hope our list was easy to use and helped you with your packing struggles. Tell us your packing essentials that we may have missed and packing hacks to fit it all in the limited luggage space!  All the best and take care!
