Mining is a risky business. Therefore, usage of mining lights is essential for miners to guide their way through the dark underground passages. Moreover, an uninterrupted light source is crucial for them to work and identify machine issues. In the early days, open lamps were used which caused disastrous explosions. As technology advanced, safer and efficient form of mining lights were put to use.

Davy's safety lamp was the first safe source of illumination for the miners. Later on, bulbs replaced them; however, they emitted poor light. Afterwards, use of LED lights in various industrial sectors gained popularity. It prompted the incorporation of LED mining light, especially for underground mining. It not only provides with sufficient light but is also safe to use in the flammable mining environment.

Why are LED mining lights important?

The underground mining environment is filled with methane gas which is highly flammable. LED light is safe for using as it is non-flammable, emits a uniform distortion-free light, shines the brightest and is cost-effective too. Moreover, it has a longer life span than other mining lights used so far. Under gloomy mining environment, LED lights improve visibility of workers.

Why are LED lights indispensable for underground mining?

Provides durability under harsh environment

As mentioned earlier, underground mining is dangerous. The miners are subjected to long hours of mining activities. Conventional lights like incandescent bulbs produce more heat which adds to the discomfort of these miners. Fluorescent lights suffer from frequent burnouts and require constant replacement. Thus, LED lamps have proved to be a necessary alternative for underground mining activities. Moreover, these can withstand vibrations from drilling operations. Under circumstances of breakage, these lights do not pose any threat to the miners.

Cost-effective alternative

LED lamps are known for their low power consumption and are even cheaper than conventional lights. As mining operations demand constant light source, conventional mining lamps are subjected to excessive heating and burning out of filaments.

Conventional lamps like incandescent bulbs provide up to 4000 hours of life. HID lamps and fluorescent bulbs provide a maximum of 20,000 hours. LED lights move past them significantly providing astounding life of over 100,000 hours. Longer life of LED mining light requires less maintenance. Investing in LED lamps substantially cuts down the recurring cost of replacement. As most accidents are caused by slipping and falling, LED neutralises this chance to a minimum as they’re barely shut down for maintenance.

Brightest source of light

For underground mining, a well-lit working environment is crucial for miners’ safety. Temporary blackouts due to malfunction of conventional lights resulted in halting of mining activities. LED mining light gives an advantage here as it doesn't suffer from decreasing emission under prolonged usage. It doesn't burn out either.

The significant thing about these lights is that they light up instantly. They don't require warming up like HID lamps which needed 20 minutes of a warm-up period.

Leading mining companies are entirely replacing their existing mining lights along with other crimping tools. Upgrading to LED lamps has significantly dropped down the chances of mining hazards among miners. As the mining industry is evolving, maintaining the safety of the workers has become a top priority. LED mining lamps are assisting in achieving this aim.
