It is also known as a Core Biopsy because it involves the removal of cylindrical sections or cores of breast tissue using a needle.
A core biopsy is an outpatient surgery.
• It is performed using local anesthetic.
• A small injection is given to numb the region of the lump before inserting a special hollow needle into the bump and extracting a few cores of tissue.
• To confirm the diagnosis, the cores are submitted to a pathologist for biopsy.
• A core biopsy not only confirms the malignancy, but also identifies the 'type.'
• Doctors regularly analyze three IHC markers on biopsy samples from every breast cancer patient: ER (Estrogen Receptor), PR (Progesterone Receptor), .
• The information acquired allows us to design our further therapy.
A stereotactic biopsy is performed when a mammography is utilized to guide the breast biopsy. It is also known as an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy or an MRI-guided core needle biopsy.
