When Intel made the 386 processor,

(allowing Virtual Memory, and tasks)

IBM did not jump on it.

Maybe IBM thought the 32 bit internal

386 pc's would cut into their small machine

market...

The 386 clone market exploded!

Intel made an upgrade card for

True Blue IBM shops...

The Intel Inboard 386 plugged into a

PC/AT EISA slot, and a processor

ribbon cable plugged into the 286 socket

on the motherboard, making this a 386.

for the AS/400 (server) computers

allowing different processor architectures

to run the same code without recompiling ...
