Biomimetics is the study of nature and natural occurrences with the goal of understanding underlying mechanisms, gaining ideas from nature, and applying notions to science, engineering, and medicine. Biomimetic investigations include fluid-drag-reduction swimsuits inspired by shark skin structure, Velcro closures inspired by burrs, aeroplane shapes inspired by the appearance of birds, and sturdy building designs inspired by the backbone of turban shells.
Medical Biomimetics is a multidisciplinary discipline that combines chemical, engineering, and biological concepts. The concepts are used to create materials, devices, or synthetic systems that have functions or activities that are similar to biological processes. Materials that interact with any aspect of a biological system, whether synthetic or natural, are referred to as biomaterials.
