What is Termite?
Termites are the winged insects that feed on dead and decaying plant material which many times includes woods. This termite cause damages to houses and many other places also. Termites live in such type of colonies that can range from small to very large number.
Termite
a. Wings are roughly equal in length
b. Antennae are straight; may droop
Many types of Termite-
a. Native subterranean termite.
b. Drywoodtermite.
c. Formosan termite.
Treatment for termites through chemical and non chemical method:-
Chemical method-
a. Liquid treatment in soil:-
The common chemical treatment is liquid treatment in which pesticides are used in the soil to destroy the termites which comes in contact. It makes a long term barrier for the termites so that they couldn't enter into the house and also prevents infestation.
b. Termite baits:- Termite baits contain cellulose which act as a slow insecticides which helps to kill the termites. It contains a negative health impact in both humans and the environment. Termite baits are placed under the ground or over active mud tubes.
c. Borates:- Borates are derived from boron. This is a chemical material which helps to kill the termites. It can kill termites through the digestion method. Borax are injected in a powder form to the dry wood termite colony. It is difficult to fully expose all termites in a colony to the powder.
Other chemicals that kill termites are:-
- Chlorpyrifos 20% EC. - it is a multitalented insecticide which controls all sucking, biting, chewing and soil pests along with termites. ...
- Lindane 20% EC. - a litre of Lindane 20% EC is mixed with 19 litres of water. ...
- Imidacloprid 30.5% SC.
Non-chemical method:-
a. Excess moisture:-
To control termites in houses or any other buildings there should be no moisture present in houses or other buildings because termites attack very much on the moisture places. To keep the excess moisture out from houses or any other places there should be indoor air inside the houses or other places.
b. Expose termites to sunlight:-
Sunlight is the biggest enemy of termite as the termites remain in moisture places if they gets contact with the sunlight then they may get killed by the sunlight. So to get rid of termites they should be exposed to sunlight or there hives should be exposed to sunlight.
c. Cardboard traps:-
Cardboards are used to attract termites because it will kill the termites in a large quantity. Cardboards contain cellulose which gives the aroma of wood by which the termites gets attracted to the cardboard. So when the colony of termites are gathered into the cardboard it makes very easy e to kill them by burning.
Uses of household products to kill:-
- By using white vinegar termites can be killed.
- Mixture of salt and water is another process to kill termites.
- Soap water can be used to kill termite.
Preventing termite infestation:-
After construction of buildings the soil should be dry because termites attack in moisten places so if the soil is dry then it cannot attack in the soil. Drainage and leakage should be maintained properly so that termites couldn't attack at that places. Uses of stones and cement can also help to prevent termite
enter into the buildings. Termite contact trees and shrubs should not be planted close to the buildings or any termite contact trees shouldn't be kept inside the buildings or houses as it can spread easily to other furniture present in that building or house. Houses or buildings which are made with cement and stones makes very difficult for termite to enter into the building so wood should not be used to make buildings in moist places. Inspection should be done regularly around the buildings or houses so that to make sure termites couldn't able to attack at that places.
