It may come as no surprise that Costa Rica offers some amazing opportunities for travelers. What you may not know is that it is also an ideal place for a family vacation.
There’s a very common word that pops up when people hear “family vacation,” and that word is “can’t.” As in, “we can’t take our kids” and “we can’t do that if we have kids with us.”
If you’re worried that your kids won’t be able to keep up, won’t have fun, or won’t appreciate the lush landscape as much as you, have no fear! There’s plenty which makes a Costa Rica family vacation lively, enriching, and exciting for all ages.
Hiking
One of the greatest treasures of Costa Rica is its natural beauty. Whether it’s traversing through a dense jungle, or hiking a mountain, all who venture into the natural world there are sure to experience awe inspiring scenes of nature at its best. If you’re worried your kids aren’t up to a challenging hike, there’s plenty of kid friendly trails and paths that are just as amazing as the more difficult treks. Try Poas Volcano, which is a relatively tame hike up to one of the deepest and most spectacular crater lakes in the world.
Stay on the lookout for unusual animals such as parrots and monkeys!
Snorkeling
Costa Rica’s natural beauty doesn’t just exist on land. One of the best things about this Central American paradise is its clear ocean waters making snorkeling an ideal activity for all ages.
The amount and diversity of marine animals living off the coast are some of the most magical in the world. Take a day trip to Tortuga Island off the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula for an amazing snorkeling experience that even young kids can enjoy!

Zip Lining
If you’ve never tried zip lining through a rainforest, you’re missing out. This activity is not only kid friendly, it’s exciting and powerful to confidently soar through the air in a thick, lush jungle. This is my favorite activity and one your kids are sure to enjoy!
Kids taller than 3’11” can enjoy zip lining tours from Sky Trek, choosing tours in either Monteverde or the majestic Arenal Volcano.
Wildlife Tours
You can’t have a Costa Rica family vacation and NOT do a wildlife tour! The whole country is a tropical rainforest, and comes with some of the most diverse wildlife anywhere in the world. Lizards, iguanas, the chestnut-mandibled toucan, the white headed capuchin monkey, anteaters, three-toed sloths, and so much more all flourish here — over 500,000 different species, in fact, many unique to this country. It’s an activity that is easy to do, and is sure to please everyone involved.
Traveling with your kids to Costa Rica is a fun and exciting adventure. Make sure you plan and pack accordingly, and you’re sure to have memories that last a lifetime! You’ll be happy and your kids will thank you for years to come.
