Types of resolution

The ability of the two to display digital television streams in either standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD) is the fundamental distinction between the two. While an HD set-top box can display both standard definition and high definition channels, an SD set-top box can only access standard definition channels.
Myth2: 4K set-top box and 4K smart TV are both the same
Both systems are different. A set-top box can be run on a non-smart TV and you get to see high-quality content without running a hoe in your pocket. But in the case of a smart TV, these are those systems that are often slightly priced higher because of the name –smart.
Nowadays most of the non-smart TVs run on 4k resolution and you can connect STB to give you the best of both worlds. The picture quality should not be the main focus of concern while buying.
