I spent my summers in a converted

One Room Schoolhouse, above a trout stream, across from a Dairy Farm,

near a Catholic Church that gave

Seminarians their first parish.

We played softball and football and frisbee on the Church lawn.

My friend Ben, from the farm across the road, had lots of LEGOS and tonka earth moving vehicles. He gave me my first driving experience, pulling a McCormick

Harvester with a Ford F Tractor, attempting to pull-start it. He then rebuilt the rings.  He was 14.

Ben played the organ in church, as I sang with a folk mass group in the city.

Ben became a Jet Mechanic.

I was an Altar Boy, and helped the

farmers unload hay wagons at 25 cents per load. The Church picnic had games of chance, bingo, and hot dogs.

The picnic dinner had the best imaginable

1/2 chicken dinner, barbequed outside, with white pepper seasoning... and fresh local

Blackberry, apple, and rhubarb pie, and coffee.

8 miles away was the town of Arcade, NY,

with a Steam Excursion Railroad, a Wallace's five and ten, and a Railroad store

that stocked DC and Marvel 12 cent comic books, 5 cent Strato gliders, penny candy,

Blackjack and Sour Orange gum, and

popsicles and ice cream sandwiches.

I used to mow the lawn (3/4 acre of 3' Timothy), burn the garbage, and wash the dishes for a 50 cent allowance.

Urban Buffalo was Democrat.

The farmers were Republican.
