What is a Technical Assessment Test?
Technical Assessment Test is defined as a pre-employment assessment test which is used as an initial screening tool to evaluate the technical skills of the candidates which are required for a specific job role. Technical assessments are conducted mainly to check the technical knowledge of the candidates. Sometimes, it is also referred to as a Technical Test Battery. Such tests are not just limited to technical jobs like IT, coding, or software development, but it also includes things like preparing a presentation, creating a design or writing an article and much more. It depends on the nature of the business of a company as to what kind of technical job it involves.
Here are some tips for the hiring managers to consider while using technical assessment test:
- Relevant to the Job Role- What if your company is dealing in such a product which does not have any technical aspect, but still you are having a technical round in your recruitment process. Conducting a technical assessment test just for the sake of it will not benefit your company in any way.
Firstly, analyze whether your interview process actually needs a technical test round or not. Make sure you are governing such a test only if it is required. Also, the technical assessment test that you will be conducting should be relevant to the job role that you are offering. Imagine you have an opening in the company for the role of content writer and you are taking an assessment test related to coding. How irrelevant it would be for the applicants to give such a test and for your company as well.
- The Test’s Objectives should be Accomplished- Before beginning the hiring process, a company should clearly define its objectives for each round of its recruitment process. After the technical assessment round is over, the employers should be able to get answers to the questions which they wanted to get answered. If the results of the technical round doesn’t provide any further information, helps in making decisions or doesn’t fulfill your objectives, then it wasn’t worth conducting it.
- Inform Candidates about the Technical Round in Advance- Let the applicants know about the whole interviewing process a few days earlier. Informing about the format, date and timings of the interview in advance helps the candidates to prepare well for the interview. Also, communicate what type of interview will be conducted, what to expect from the company and what they are expected to do. Also, let them know if there is any technical round beforehand. All this information will help them to get prepared well for the interview in advance.
- Provide feedback to the Candidates about their Performance- Candidates like to hear feedback of the work that they have done. Respond them back telling how good or bad they have done in the technical test. In what aspects they were good and in what particular aspect they were lacking. This feedback will help the candidates to improve their shortcomings in the future.
