The three women who died were the aunt and cousins of Terry Langford, who stated his relatives had used the road many occasions with out problems. Langford, who splits his time between a Salt Lake City suburb and a home he owns in La Mora, said his aunt was on her way to Phoenix to pick up her husband at the airport and that the other girls had been heading to visit family members in Mexico. The group, some training and the majority not, were part of a family that had some relatives excommunicated from the church for polygamy but nonetheless practiced Sunday School in their houses and was not within the distance of a church to attend. La Mora, a small group in Sonora state, where households farm pecans and raise cattle and is just a three-hour drive from the border over dust roads, was based by a number of the unique pioneers despatched by the LDS Church to colonize Northern Mexico in the late 1800s, before being excommunicated by the Church.
