Geotechnical engineers examine the behavior of soil and rock under pressure, particularly in relation to the construction of structures. This means examining the above- and below-ground behavior of soil and rocks in relation to the design of foundations.
Skill Level: Most positions in this unit group require a skill level equivalent to a bachelor's degree or higher qualification. However, some positions may also require relevant experience and/or on-the-job training in addition to formal qualifications (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

- Planning and coordinating site activities, managing site labor, and overseeing the supply of construction materials, equipment, and plant.
- Collecting soil and rock samples from various depths across sites, evaluating their strength, compressibility, and other characteristics that may impact their response to imposed structures, and calculating safe loading for the soil.
- Estimating total costs by examining architectural and engineering drawings and specifications, and creating comprehensive cost plans and estimates to assist with budgetary control.
