What happens in a sleep study?

When you are asleep, a lot goes into your brain and body. One needs to understand what it is in order to treat sleep problems. What can be measured through a sleep study?

The most commonly recommended sleep study is polysomnography. Here, a patient undergoes a sleep test that is usually conducted in a lab. During the exam, the person is asked to rest. Then, a technician in the other room observes the patient and records his brain activity and additional significant information. Together, the data helps in revealing sleep patterns. Using it, the doctor can find out whether your body is receiving enough oxygen, if you can rest well, how often you wake up, and other such things.

What sleep-lab equipment is used during the process?

The technician secures small sensors on your head and body using adhesive to collect information on your sleep patterns. These wires are connected to a computer screen and gathered overhead with plenty of slack so you can easily move around while resting. Elastic belts may also be secured around your chest and abdomen to measure breathing during the process. Moreover, a clip is placed on your finger and earlobe to check oxygen levels in your bloodstream.  

During the first half of the test, if the technician suspects that you may have obstructive sleep apnea, you will be recommended to wear a CPAP machine. The mask will be checked to ensure it fits your face. Afterwards, the technician will oversee the machine and adjust it to see if it improves your condition.

How can you increase comfort during a sleep study?

Comfort is necessary for your sleep. Of course, you do not feel at home at the sleep centre, but the technicians take that into account. Furthermore, they ask you to take the following precautions to rest peacefully. Here is what you should do-

  • Do not drink alcohol if you are scheduled for a sleep study. It will lead to poor sleep.
  • You should not take coffee or caffeine in any other form (tea, cola, chocolate) as it prevents you from resting well during the night.
  • Report all the supplements you take to your doctor. And only continue those okayed by the doctor.
  • You should follow your doctor’s instructions and bring comfy pyjamas or books to read to fall asleep.
