10 Different Types of Thread Taps

Thread taps come into various different types depending on numbers of factors such as size, type of machinery work, weight, heaviness, etc. Acme Tap offers a wide range of varieties in thread taps.

Here you will get to know about 10 different types of threat taps and their usages: -

  1. Hand Taps

Hand taps are very common types of taps; they are easily any hardware store. These taps are used for multipurpose however It is recommended to avoid Hand taps for any CNC work.’

  1. Taper Tap

Taper taps are one of the three types of hand taps. These taps have a significant amount of taper which helps to cut threads gradually and steadily. 8 to 10 threads are tapered. Taper taps are one of the most common types of taps.

  1. Plug Tap

Plug tap comes in between taper and bottoming taps as there are usually 3 to 5 threads tapered in plug taps. Plug taps have more tapered threads than bottoming tap and less tapered threads than taper traps.

  1. Spiral Point Taps

These taps are called spiral point tapes because they have spiral cut. You might confuse these taps with other hand taps. The spiral angle on the front cutting edge is the outer identity of such taps. This spiral angle also helps in ejecting the chips and it improves the cutting performance of the taps. Spiral acme taps are said to be the cheapest taps available.

  1. Gun Taps

These taps are also in spiral cutting shape, and they are also called spiral flute taps. These taps are ideal to operate when the objects have blind holes as they eject a chip they can successfully intersect in an interrupted hole.

  1. Pipe Taps

These taps are used for the tapping pipe threads.  These pipes are available in straight and tapered pipes you can choose one according to the need of the tapping thread. These taps are made to remove more material on top of the hole which makes these taps work harder as these taps can’t be drilled in a tapered hole.

  1. Roll Taps

These roll traps cold form rather than cutting threads. They push the metal out of the way and make it shrink into a position as they can’t cut the thread. These taps are usually used for softer materials, for example, aluminum.

  1. Interrupted Thread Taps

These threads taps are specialized in extracting chips. These taps have a tooth for other threads. These thread taps remove every other tooth which helps in breaking chips and doing so also gives more space for the chip to get extracted and allows the lubricant to efficiently go inside.
