DO YOU QUALIFY FOR FREE BOILER GRANTS? A GUIDE ON THE REQUIREMENTS

According to the latest figures, the average cost of replacing a boiler is a staggering £2300. With British households already struggling to pay the bills amid rising energy costs, we need all the help we can get.

That’s why it is more important than ever to check whether you qualify for government-funded boiler grants. Grants for new boilers to replace damaged or old ones are provided through the ‘Big Six’ energy companies and backed by the government.

Millions of households potentially qualify, so it’s worth checking to see if you’re eligible. Here’s what you need to know.

1. THE BASIC CRITERIA FOR BOILER GRANTS

The government has established basic criteria that must be met in order to receive a boiler replacement grant. There are numerous criteria you can meet. For starters, you are eligible if you own your home.

If you are renting, you will need written permission from your landlord to apply for a new boiler. In addition, your existing boiler must be at least five years old, which you can check by examing the boiler.

Your home must also have a gas supply. Finally, you will need to be receiving certain government benefits to qualify for grants for boilers, which we will explore further down this article.

2. PRIMARY BENEFITS NEEDED TO QUALIFY

So, who qualifies for a boiler grant? In order to get your boiler replacement funded, you will need to be in receipt of at least ONE of these primary government benefits:

  • Income-related Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related ESA
  • Income Support
  • Universal Credit (provided only if your take-home pay has been less than £1250 for a full year)
  • Working Tax Credits (provided only if your household income is less than £16,010)

3. SECONDARY BENEFITS NEEDED TO QUALIFY

As well as being in receipt of one of the above benefits, you will also need to be receiving a certain component benefit. It’s worth noting that a free boiler for disabled people is a top priority, so disability allowance will mean you are likely to be eligible. You will need to be in receipt of at least ONE of the following component benefits:

  • Pension Premium
  • Child Under 16 Benefits
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Employment Support
  • Personal Independent Payment (PIP)
  • Limited Capability for Work Payments
  • Over 60 Years Old
  • Disabled Worker’s Allowance
  • Severe Disability Benefit
  • Child Under 20 (not in Higher Education)

So, if you receive one of the benefits from the above section, combined with one of the components in this section, you should be eligible.
