Dealing with UTIs: What You Need to Know

UTIs Introduction

(UTIs) are primarily caused by bacteria that normally live in the intestines, especially E. coli. In rare cases, fungi or viruses can also trigger UTIs, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. Typically, bacteria from the feces move upwards through the urethra and into the bladder, causing an infection. For individuals with compromised immune systems, other sources of infection, such as an infection on the heart's lining (endocarditis), can spread through the bloodstream to the kidneys and result in complications.
