Energy Efficient Glass

Glass is one of the most popular and versatile building materials used today and modern performance glass is extraordinary in various aspects. One such aspect is energy efficiency. In winters and summers, there is a lot of heat energy and cold wave energy that we need to store indoors to remain comfortable. When we talk about modern glasses there is an additional double glazing coating done, to prevent the energy to leave the confined space. The pattern and the built-in properties of modern glass have not changed over half a century. If we have a look at the different timelines of glass technology, we will observe that glass technology has come a long way and as a result of today we have energy-efficient glasses. All across the world right now, the high energy efficiency bar is being lifted. Modern performance energy efficient glasses give you the freedom to build with the maximum wow factor. It is also known by the name of e-glass and comfort glass.

These kinds of glasses have an e-coating in the glass front that sends back the harmful UV rays and infrared rays of the sun. It only allows visible light to penetrate in the form of radiant energy, which is an important form of heat transfer. This filtered penetration reduces the emissivity of the glass and reducing the emissivity of one or more glass surfaces benefits the overall glass performance. These energy-efficient glasses have a microscopic coating that reflects long-wave infrared energy or heat. When the interior heat tries to escape to the cold outside during the winters, these glasses reflect the heat inside.

The reverse happens in the summer when these glasses reduce the heat absorbed by the glass and hence you would not have to use your air- conditioners much and will also reduce fading on your space floors. One pane of energy-efficient glass is equal to 2 panes of normal glasses in terms of overall functionality. The e-coating mentioned above are of two different types namely:-

  • Passive Low E-Coating:- This kind is applied to glass ribbons during the production of glass. They are applied to the various insulating surface of the glass unit. This kind of coating is very durable and very good for cold climates because they allow some of the sun’s rays to pass through and help to build the heat during the winters.

  • Solar Control Low E-Coating:- Most solar control low e-coating are used in solar bands. It is applied to pre-cut glasses. This is also known as soft coat and has lower emissivity and superior solar control. They are ideal for mild to hot climates.

Both of these kinds of e-coating result in better energy-efficient high-performance glasses.
