If you’re considering taking classes with us at University of Phoenix, please take a moment and glance through the admissions requirements listed below. Requirements may vary by college and degree level. Though requirements will differ, there are certain requirements necessary for all students to complete prior to enrollment. For single courses, undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs, additional requirements may be needed. Please read through the requirements carefully when making decisions about enrollment – to be sure all necessary requirements are completed for your desired program or course.

To enter an associate or bachelor’s degree program, you must:
Have earned an acceptable high school diploma, GED® equivalent, California High School Proficiency Examination certificate or foreign secondary school equivalent. If you currently don’t meet this requirement, you can arrange to take the GED through your state’s GED administrator’s office or search for the nearest GED testing center.
Be at least 16 years of age at the time of application if applying to an associate degree program.
Meet work experience requirements or have access to an organizational environment, depending on your selected degree program, in order to successfully complete program objectives and apply concepts you learn in our courses. Please contact an Enrollment Representative to learn if your program has such a requirement.
Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or hold an approved, valid visa if residing in the United States.
Not have been expelled from a previous institution.
Complete all required forms for admission as well as submit official test scores and official transcripts from all colleges and universities you’ve attended.
In addition to meeting the requirements above, residents of:
- Massachusetts and New Jersey must provide health insurance information.
- Oklahoma, Hawaii, Connecticut and Tennessee must submit immunization documentation if enrolling in a campus-based program.
- Puerto Rico must meet English Language Proficiency requirements if enrolling in a campus-based program.
- Tennessee, Nevada and South Carolina must submit high school graduation documentation.
Applicants without appropriate previous academic experience in an English language environment must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®), the Test of English as an International Communication (TOEIC®), the Berlitz® Online Proficiency Test, the Pearson Test of English Academic or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS®). As part of your admission, and depending on your grades and/or scores, prior coursework from regionally accredited or nationally accredited degree-granting institutions, or the credit earned through a national testing program such as the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)®, DANTES or Advanced Placement, may be evaluated and considered for academic credit. If you have had professional training or served in the military, you may be able to convert your training into academic credits.

To enter the Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program, you must:
Have earned an acceptable high school diploma, GED® equivalent, California High School Proficiency Examination certificate or foreign secondary school equivalent. If you currently don’t meet this requirement, you can arrange to take the GED through your state’s GED administrator’s office or search for the nearest GED testing center.
Have completed an LPN or LVN nursing program.
Have a valid, unrestricted, unencumbered LPN or LVN license from the United States in all states in which you hold an active license.
Provide an official copy of the TEAS V (Test of Essential Academic Skills) assessment, reflecting a proficient level of achievement for the overall score and in Science on the same exam. Acceptable assessment results will have been earned within one year from enrollment agreement sign date and meet the following criteria:
A score of 45.8 for Science
An overall score of 58.7
Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or hold an approved, valid visa if residing in the United States.
Not have been expelled from a previous institution.
Have a signed Criminal Background Check Disclosure.
Complete all required forms for admission as well as submit official test scores and official transcripts from all colleges and universities you’ve attended.

Hawaii must submit immunization documentation if enrolling in a campus-based program.

To enter a Master of Science in Nursing degree program, you must:
Have earned an undergraduate degree in a nursing program with an upper-division major in nursing from a regionally accredited or approved nationally accredited college or university, or have earned a comparable degree from a recognized institution outside the United States. Nurses who hold baccalaureate degrees in non-nursing programs from a regionally accredited or approved, nationally accredited college or university must successfully complete the University of Phoenix Nursing Bridge Program. This program enables nurses with baccalaureate degrees in areas other than nursing to complete three courses at the BSN level and then move directly into the MSN curriculum.
Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) as shown on the undergraduate degree posted transcript.
Have a valid, unrestricted, unencumbered RN license from the United States in all states in which you hold an active license.

Additional admission requirements for the Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner program:
Completion of all requirements for the signature of the FNP program manager on the program eligibility form.
Verification of a minimum of three years of significant full-time, post-high school work experience within the past 10 years, of which two years must be as a practicing RN and one year must be of other health care experience.

Residents of Oklahoma, Hawaii, Connecticut and Tennessee must submit immunization documentation if enrolling in a campus-based program.
Residents of Oregon must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA on their degree posted transcript.

Travel requirements for residencies
An integral component of our doctoral programs involves residencies, the physical attendance in a classroom environment at key points in each program. These residencies support the dissertation process, encourage professional networking and aid in aligning academic interests.
Doctoral residencies for international students are usually conducted at the Phoenix Main Campus in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
What you need to know:
Doctoral degree coursework is conducted online with an annual residency requirement that varies in length from three to eight days. International students are expected to travel to Phoenix a total of 10 to 16 days over the duration of their programs, depending on the degree.
Students admitted to the U.S. in F-1 visa status are monitored by the University, through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a government database. SEVIS is designed to accommodate traditional academic institutions. Due to the nontraditional format of the University of Phoenix doctoral residency requirements, however, the University is authorized to issue an I-20 that is only valid for the duration of each residency at the Phoenix Main Campus. International students admitted to a doctoral program cannot remain in the United States between residencies under the I-20 and/or F-1 status.
Under the advisement of the Department of Homeland Security, University of Phoenix is required to issue a new I-20 and SEVIS ID number to international students for each residency course when travel to the U.S. is required. Students are therefore required to pay a SEVIS I-901 fee ($200 USD) in advance of each residency.
