PFAS chemicals have been discovered in nursing mothers in Lyon, the third-largest city in France, in potentially hazardous proportions.
"Forever chemicals," or compounds known for their incredible environmental persistence, are almost everywhere, including in our air, furniture, and clothing.
According to new research from the University of Stockholm, they can be found in rainwater in the majority of areas on earth, including settings like Antarctica.
However, for approximately 200,000 residents who live close to chemical plants outside of Lyon, France, potentially hazardous quantities of the chemicals are appearing in vegetable gardens, drinking water, and even nursing mothers' milk.
Alarming levels of PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, have been found in the air, ground, and water at two chemical facilities south of Lyon, the third-largest city in France, according to a press investigation.
The discoveries have sparked calls for authorities to look into the contamination and take action against this entire class of synthetic compounds, which have been used for decades across a variety of industries to create coatings and goods that are resistant to heat, water, or stains.
