Are schools responsible for nurturing your children on your behalf?

Our children are our responsibility. In our country and many other Asian cultures, children are seen as an extension of life instead of a choice. In simpler words, having children is seen as a necessary expectation than a choice a woman makes or a couple make. Because of this, we have witnessed generations of families where children have struggled and continue to struggle with receiving an appropriate amount of affection, nurture and resources to grow into an emotionally, financially and mentally independent adult, thus, creating a toxic cycle of generational trauma that affects all existing and future generations.

Often, we see parents trying to pass on the basic responsibilities of nurturing and educating their children to the schools their children are enrolled in. So many parents of little children expect the teachers to teach basic moral values and manners along with the school curriculum to their children. While teachers always indulge in such basic teachings, the fact is that it is the parent’s duty to teach these values and manners to their children. It does not matter whether the children are enrolled in one of the best schools in Greater Noida West or New Delhi, the school cannot take the sole responsibility of teaching basic life skills to children. The school can always work along with parents to teach their children but parents should not pass on the entire responsibility to the schools.

Last year, parents of a 6 year old child had enrolled their little one in one of the best public schools in Greater Noida West. A few months after the new academic session commenced, the parents tried to blame the school for not teaching basic manners to their child. This resulted in a city-wide debate over the topic “Are schools responsible for nurturing your children on your behalf?”
