What is Backlash?
Backlash refers to the angle that the output shaft of a gearhead can rotate without the input shaft moving. Backlash arises due to tolerance in manufacturing; the gear teeth need some play to avoid jamming when they mesh. Backlash is clearance between mating components, sometimes described as the amount of lost motion due to clearance or slackness when movement is reversed and contact is re-established. In short it is a clearance between two teeth’s mating. Backlash is present in any mechanical system where the driving member is not directly connected to the load. The most common case occurs with gears, where the loss of contact between teeth at motion inversion causes a backlash gap to open.
Every type of gear has to deal with backlashing. Backlashing is very necessary for gear’s smooth functioning, only the manufacturer needs to minimize its timing so they can prove themselves more efficient than other competitor.
