Professor Joseph Ifeanyi Brian-D Adinma was born an illustrious son of Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State South Eastern Nigeria. He had most of his primary education in Northern Nigeria and his secondary education at St Theresa’s College Nsukka obtaining his West African School Certificate in 1972. He commenced his higher school certificate course in 1973 at the Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) Onitsha cutting that short following his admission to read Medicine at the University of Nigeria in the same year 1973. He obtained his basic Degree in Medicine (BM, BCh) from the University of Nigeria 1979. Following the one (1) year pre-registration Houseman-ship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, he proceeded for his National Youth Service Corp Programme with the Nigerian Navy (NNS Akaso) in Port Harcourt. Thereafter, Dr. Adinma started his Residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in 1981 obtaining the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 1986. He worked as a locum Consultant with our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Ihiala (1986 – 1987) and later as a Resident Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Iyi – Enu Mission Hospital Ogidi (1987 – 1989). In 1990, Dr. Adinma joined Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Teaching Hospital as a lecturer one (1), and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist respectively. His rise along the Academic ladder was meteoric being elevated to the rank of Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology by 1995, only five (5) years following his initial employment as lecturer one (1)! He has remained a Professor and Honorable Member of the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University till date. Over the years Professor Adinma had held several leadership positions at the College of Health Sciences of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University – Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1990 – 1995); Sub Dean – Clinical (1995 – 1996); Dean Faculty of Medicine (1996 – 1998); Provost College of Health Sciences (1998 – 2000, 2000 – 2002). He was a member of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (1996 – 1999) and also a member of the Board of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (1998 – 2002). Professor Adinma is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS); Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) Chicago, USA; Fellow of the International Society of Surgeons (FISS) Basel Switzerland; Fellow of the Institute of Health Educator of Nigeria (FIHEN); Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences; Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (FAAAS); as well as membership of several bodies, societies and organizations including the Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) where he served as the 16th National President. Professor Adinma has distinguished himself in academic leadership having been in the editorial team of several learned journals, either as editor-in-chief or editorial consultant. Professor Adinma has supervised and directed students at both undergraduate and post graduate level. He has been an examiner for the West African College of Surgeons, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1995 and had been an external Examiner in Obstetrics and Gynecology for several Universities in Nigeria. He had either led the Accreditation team or participated in the Post Graduate Accreditation assessment for several Teaching Hospitals/Post Graduate Training centres. He had also delivered quality lectures in several Post Graduate Revision Courses in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as guest presentations in International conferences, notably the 17th Figo world congress held in Santiago, Chile in 2003; the 21st figo world congress in Obstetrics and gynaecology held in Vancouver Canada in 2015; and the 22nd FIGO world congress of obstetrics and gynaecology held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in 2018. Professor Adinma has also accessed several academics for elevation to either Reader or Professor in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology from several Nigeria universities. Professor Adinma is currently a member of the board of the association for the advancement of family planning and also a member of the board of trustees of Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) and has been a member of the board of National Hospital Abuja, interim chairman of the governing council of the College of Health Technology Obosi, Anambra State, and has at one time or the other been in the membership of other boards including National Primary Health Care Development Agency and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, as well as membership of key Committees – including Anambra State Committee on the establishment of a new State University, Tink – Tank Committee for Nigerian National Development, Tink – Tank Committee on the Community Development of Neni town, 13-Man Committee on the Resolution of Leadership Crises in Neni town and Chairman Neni Commission on Igwe election. Professor Adinma is presently the president of PAC-Net Women’s Health and Youth Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization that promote, protect and uplift women’s reproductive Health and right, and promote youth leadership and development. He was the director of Ekwueme Center for Multi-disciplinary Research (ECMR) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He initiated and currently direct the Center for Health and Allied Legal and Demographical Development Research and Training (CHALADDRAT) of the same University. Professor Adinma has been the FIGO focal point man, for Nigeria, on women’s sexual and reproductive right and in 2015 was appointed by the President of FIGO to serve as the African Regional Ambassador for the FIGO Adolescent, Preconception and Maternal Nutrition Initiative which was inaugurated at the XXIst FIGO World Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vancouver, Canada. Professor Adinma was, in 2017 elected as the Vice President of Africa Arab Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AAFOG), in Cape Town, South Africa, to serve a two year term up to 2019. In 2020, he was elected as the foundation president of the Association of West African Societies of obstericsn and gynecology (AWASOG/WACOG) following the inauguration of the society at Abuja, Nigeria. Professor Adinma holds the traditional title of Igiligi Udo Amichi bestowed to him by the traditional ruler of Amichi, Nigeria in recognition of his selfless service to humanity, and women’s health in particular. He was also, in 2019 bestowed with the traditional title of Obata odelu Abagana, shortly after he had taken the prestigious and highest traditional title at his home town Neni – the prestigious Ozo-Ezeani title and taking four traditional appellation attached to the title – 1. Ezeani Igiligi-Mmuta 2. Ezeani Igiligi Udo 3. Ezeani Ifenayichukwu and 4. Ezeani Igiliebumkpume Professor Adinma has won several Nominations and Awards. He is a Justice of Peace (JP) and was given the Noble Peace Maker (NPM) award by Neni community for the part he had continually played towards conflict resolution in the town. Notable nominations and awards accorded to him over the years include International Who’s Who of Contemporary Achievement – fifth edition by American Biographical Institute; International Man of the year 1997/1998, I.B.C England; Who’s Who in the World – sixteenth edition by Marquis, NJ, USA; Outstanding People of the 20th century, I.B.C. England; International Who’s Who of Intellectuals – 13th edition and so many other awards including those from Rotary Club, several societies and Churches. Professor Adinma is patron to many associations including All Saints Catholic Church Choir, Nkpor. He completed a two term tenure as the first vice chairman of the parish council of Immaculate heart of Mary catholic church, Neni, Anaocha L.G.A, following which he was installed as the patron of the parish council. He also served as the acting vice chairman of the Chaplaincy council of St. Joseph De Worker catholic Chaplaincy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Professor Adinma served as an Honorable Commissioner of Health in the Government of Anambra State in South Eastern Nigeria from 2003 to 2006. During his tenure Professor Adinma won an Award as one of the five (5) most outstanding Health Commissioners throughout the Federation. Professor Adinma has worked as a Consultant to many International and Supra National Agencies including World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Planned Parenthood Global/Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Partnership for Transformation of Health System (PATHS2), IPAS and Society for Family Health (SFH). Professor Adinma has published extensively in learned peer-reviewed Journals from literally all the continents of the world. All together he has a total of approximately 125 published works including several others at various stages of assessment for publication. He has also made no fewer than a 100 presentations at both local and International conferences. Professor Adinma is married to Prof. Echee Adinma of the Department of Community Medicine of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and between them, they have five children – Dr. Zikora, Dr. Nneoma, Mr. Munachiso, Barrister Lotafechi and Mr. Tikuechukwu and three grandchildren – Zonachi Ivory, Cigocichie Jade and Chimdindu Gianna-Marie, Erimma, and Ziora.
