Typhoon Hinnamnor, the 11th of this year, passed over South Korea on Tuesday, leaving one person dead and two others unaccounted for, according to the government.
Eight more people were reported missing in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, though they were not counted by the federal government. According to reports, the missing individuals entered subterranean parking spaces at two different apartment complexes to transfer their cars since the parking grounds were flooded with water.
As the search for the missing continues, President Yoon Suk-yeol is reportedly considering going to the city.
Typhoon Hinnamnor made landfall on the southern coast of the country around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration, after passing Jeju Island at midnight. At 7:10 a.m., the typhoon turned back toward the open ocean.
Typhoon Hinnamnor was approaching Ulleung Island, an island east of the Korean Peninsula, around 9 a.m. Tuesday as it raced northeast at 62 kph. At its center, the typhoon's air pressure was 965 hectopascals, and its top wind speed was 37 meters per second.
Typhoon Hinnamnor was forecast to pass by Ulleung Island's northeastern shore at around 3 p.m., 330 kilometers away, then make landfall 420 kilometers away from Sapporo, Japan, at around 9 p.m.
Once it reaches Sapporo, the typhoon is predicted to weaken even further and transform into an extratropical storm, according to the state weather service.
With few exceptions in the coastal districts as of midday on Tuesday, South Korea likewise removed typhoon warnings as the storm moved away from the nation.
