It is sometimes necessary to cut down a tree that has become diseased or weakened, as it may pose a threat to your property and the surrounding area. In such cases a tree felling surgeon will be needed to do the job for you as cutting down trees is a complex and dangerous job. A tree surgeon has the expert knowledge and experience required to do the job efficiently and safely. Once a tree has been cut down, the stump and the roots still remain, and they in turn may also need to be dealt with as stumps and roots can cause issues if left in place. Let’s look at the reasons why tree stump removal may be called for :

Why tree stump removal may be necessary

After cutting down a tree, a tree surgeon usually then cuts the felled tree into smaller logs / blocks. This leaves the stump and its roots still in the ground. Let's look at why you may need to remove the stump too :

The tree may continue to grow - There may be no leaves left to provide food to the roots, but sometimes the roots may have enough nutrients left in them to allow sprouts to grow from the leftover stump. If sprouts develop into leaves, then there's a chance that the tree may try to grow back.

Pests and insect infestation - Once a tree has been cut to the stump, its roots will start to decay over time. This makes it an ideal home for pests, organisms and fungi to flourish, which may spread to other plants in time, passing on diseases to them. Insects and rodents can also start to burrow in them and make the stump their home. These pests could then make their way to your house and cause a nuisance there.

Safety factor - Children playing in your garden, or adults walking may trip over an errant stump. Also, when you come to do your garden maintenance (particularly in the case of using a lawn mower), you may find it annoying to have to negotiate a stump for years to come.

Spoiling the aesthetics - A stump can be an eyesore and take up valuable space in your garden. If / when you wish to sell your house, prospective buyers may have concern if you have tree stumps in your garden.

Options for tree stump removal

Tree stump removal is a job best done by a tree surgeon, or local arborist. They have the skills, techniques and equipment to do the job in half the time. Tree stump removal can be completed via two main methods :

  • Stump grinding - With this method the stump is shredded into small wooden chips, using a machine with a rotating cutting disk. The small chips can then be used as mulch in your garden. This method is less laborious than alternatives, and can be an efficient way to remove a tree stump. However the roots are still left behind in the soil which will then decay over time.
  • Stump removal - The more common method of stump removal is to pull-out the entire stump, including the roots. This process involves a great deal of manual work. You can use heavy machinery  to aid the process, but this requires experience and the right equipment. The hole left behind is then filled up with the same soil. Other methods of stump removal include burning, or dissolving with chemicals.

If you have a stump left behind in your garden, consider removing it with the help of a professional stump removal provider, so that you can enjoy a clean and hazard-free garden once again.
