Floor coverings are always present, but how well do you know the fabrics you walk on every day? Are rugs and carpets the same? Everyone should know the difference between a rug and a carpet. The two terms are frequently used interchangeably, but knowing the difference is essential when shopping, dressing a room and laying fabric on the floor. A rug is defined as a piece of thick heavy fabric with a nap or pile that is used as a floor covering, whereas a carpet is defined as a heavy often tufted fabric used as a floor covering and a surface or layer that resembles or suggests a carpet. Synonyms? Bet.

Even though we often use the terms carpet and rug interchangeably, there is a significant difference between the two. A rug and a textured carpet are both terms for a thick piece of cloth that is typically woven from organic fibres such as cotton, jute (a vegetable fibre that can be spun into a strong, coarse thread), silk, or wool. A rug or textured carpet can also be made of synthetic materials, and both are commonly used to decorate homes and offices around the world. There are almost infinite ways to make a rug or

carpet, and how they look is frequently determined by where they came from as well as when they were woven.

One of the more formal definitions of the terms rug and carpet is size. The term rug has come to refer to a smaller item (as in an area rug that is 4 feet by 6 feet or less), whereas the term carpet refers to larger items (as in an area carpet that is over 4 feet wide and 6 feet long). Area rugs and area carpets can both be laid anywhere on a floor and easily moved, whereas wall-to-wall carpeting is permanently affixed to the floor.

As we all know, carpets are used as secondary flooring. If your floor has lost its lustre, you will consider carpeting the area. These are also an excellent choice for a large entertainment area beneath the sofa arrangement. A long trailing textured carpet can also look fantastic on the stairs!! Rugs, on the other hand, can be used for more than just covering a section of the floor. Rugs can be used to complement the contemporary or ethnic look of your interiors in a variety of ways, from pretty door mats to gorgeous wall hangings. These are also excellent choices for sofa and bed throws.

Rugs are unquestionably easier to remove and clean than carpets, which are frequently too large for a single person to handle. As a result, carpets cannot be cleaned or washed on a regular basis. It is always recommended that people living in urban areas with dusty air choose classy and thin-area rugs (unless you are ready to spend a good portion of your day vacuum cleaning the floors ). That is if you are fortunate enough to live in a rural setting surrounded by lush greenery, choose large floor carpets to add a royal touch.

So to answer your question, Are rugs and carpets the same? No, they are in fact very different.
