Asterisks indicate speaker emphasis.

Sfx: abbreviation for special effects.

[Descriptive transcript: Screen capture, followed by a video of Bill Nye the Science Guy.

#1: At the top center of the screen capture, white horizontal bars with bold, black text reads, “Bill Nye Breaks Down the Science of Skin Colour and Shows Why Racism is Ridiculous,” in all caps. Bill Nye is a white man with short silver hair, wearing a white-collared shirt and a dark bow tie. He is inside what appears to be his home; behind him, wood panels, a white lab coat hanging on a white cabinet, and a partially obscured metallic silver refrigerator can be seen. Bill Nye is standing to the right of a large black easel which holds a UV map of the world and he is gesturing to it. “LAD Bible” is watermarked in the bottom right of the screen capture in white text.]

#2: [The screen capture leads into the vertical video, with Bill Nye as pictured next to the UV world map. Nye talks directly to the camera and gestures frequently throughout the video.]

Bill Nye: This is a map of the [sfx: twinkling white sparkles appear on screen as he gestures towards the world map] continents of the Earth showing how much [holds up a beaming, round floodlight] ultraviolet light [turns off the floodlight] lands in each latitude. It turns out [gestures to map] the closer you are to the equator the more [deep sound effect as a red filter is applied to the video and Nye’s voice changes to that of a monster] *intense* the ultraviolet. We use reds [red filter is applied to the worldmap] and purples [purple filter is applied to the worldmap], but then as you move away [Nye points his thumbs in opposite directions] from the equator we change the colors to [gestures to map] orange, yellow, green, and grey.

[Nye quickly removes the geothermal map from the easel, revealing another world map underneath, this one in variations of beige and brown.]

Bill Nye: Now here's the same map of the same continent with just [holds up finger] one color and [gestures with hands] it turns out that [Nye swipes his hand] *everybody on Earth* is descended from people that live here [Nye points] in Africa and then as groups of us [Nye, looking at camera, puts his hands at the bottommost part of Africa, then moves them upward and outward] moved around the world, [gestures to the screen] the color of our skin had to change, and here's why. Our skin is where we make [Nye rattles a white pill bottle with a blue lid] Vitamin D. [gestures to self] If you don't get enough [sfx: yellow sun with animated rays pops up onscreen] ultraviolet, you don't get enough vitamin D. But if you get too much ultraviolet, then you breakdown your *folates*. [Vertical bar appears on-screen, leading up to a white bubble with “Folates” written in all caps in a saturated red-and-black color]. [Sfx: A white “pin” moves up and down the vertical bar to illustrate.] You have to have it in perfect balance. [Pin moves to the bottom of the bar, then middle then fluctuates.] And because the ultraviolet varies, the color of our skin varies. [“Folates” bar graphic disappears.] And that's it everybody -- [gestures widely with hands] that's why we have different colored skin! But we're all [holds up finger] one species! But we're not [gestures with hands] treating each other fairly! Not everyone is getting an even [picks up two pill bottles and shakes them for effect] shake so it's time to change things!
