One of the most popular types of offset smokers contains two differently sized, sealed but connected cylinders or boxes. The smaller of the two boxes is most often called a firebox. It houses wood fire or charcoal and is offset a little lower than the larger container. Some top models also feature an additional vertical cooking chamber where the smoke passes through before exiting the chimney to boost the cooking capacity.
