5 Rising SEO Trends to Follow in 2021

After a universally tough year, that forced us to deal with a “new normal”, the methods by which products are sold and bought have now been shifted to an online model of service, on a scale that has not existed before. So it does not come as a surprise that new trends are transforming the landscape of digital marketing.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which is essentially optimizing a website to bring in the maximum amount of organic traffic, has always been transient and has always drawn predictions from experts, in terms of the trends it produces, due to the ever-changing ways of online sales and digital marketing.

And with the new year, appears a wave of new SEO trends in the year 2021. Here are some trends that an aspiring content writer can follow.

1. Emphasise on Mobile Sites

As the years have gone by, more and more aspects of digital marketing have been taken over by mobile sites. As mobiles are now seen as the peak of convenience, saving people the hassle of the regular consumption experience during the pandemic, many companies are building mobile-compatible versions of their websites first, as a priority. This is an enriched version of the generally inferior mobile versions of websites, hence optimizing the customers’ experience.

2. Adapt to Google’s Algorithm Update

Google updated its search algorithm last year, which took a few weeks to roll out. Algorithm updates generally lead to an SEO-related rise in the demand for work, which is a benefit during times of economic uncertainty, such as the current day and age. Presumably jump-started by the multitude of Google searches about a single topic, Google realized that COVID-19 has changed what the general public is seeking in terms of information, products, and news. Google has been pushing websites that are known for encouraging homemade/handmade, do-it-yourself (DIY) products, such as Etsy and Pinterest, as a noteworthy amount of the population is attempting to remain indoors.

3. Lean into the Increase in E-Commerce

The pandemic that begun last year has changed the way the public buys and consumes products. One evidence of this is the notable increase in e-commerce. With the traffic on retail sites jumping to 125%, possibly due to prolonged panicked bulk-buying, the sales of certain products, specifically disposable gloves and packaged food, have drastically increased, while the sales of other products, such as suitcases, cameras, luxury apparel, etc. have decreased.

Most e-commerce websites have conducted audits and recognized the products and areas that will adequately cater to the new requirements of consumers. Many have taken the pandemic as an opportunity to even redesign their websites and highlight certain products over others.

4. Shed More Light on Local

As exported goods become more of a rarity, many countries have started focusing on homegrown products. An instance of this is Narendra Modi’s ‘vocal for local’ campaign in India, stressing a self-reliant India, promoting local Indian brands. The aim fueling ‘vocal for local’ is to make Indian products competent competitors on an international level, which is a sentiment that many companies have agreed with and taken in their stride. Thanks to this new mission, many companies are using SEO to emphasize the homegrown nature of their products, to appeal to a more concentrated audience.

5. Focus on Topics Over Keywords

During trying times such as these, consumers are searching for direction and guidance regarding the products they choose to consume. People are beginning to pay attention to the methods by which the products they are viewing are made, packaged, and delivered, due to the highly communicable nature of the disease that is causing the current pandemic. This has led to a staunch focus on content over keywords.

In order to capture an organic audience, along with this new focus on content, SEOs have begun inculcating natural, common language into new content, rather than spewing jargon related to digital marketing.
