How to wash a Duvet?

We regularly wash covers of duvets in-order-to keep them clean but due to prolonged usage, it becomes important to clean the duvet itself. It can be once a quarter if not every month, to keep it clean, hygienic and dust mites free. Though most of the duvets come with a wash care label mentioning dry clean only, some can be washed at home. You just need to take care of wash care instructions and following tips to avoid those huge laundry bills and make duvet cleaning an easy task.

Before you prepare for washing, read the wash care label properly and check whether it is machine washable or hand washable. Also, check the detergent and water temperature instructions.

After that check for any physical damage or holes. This can cause water to seep in and damage the filling. If required, stitch it up to assure that feathers will not come loose during washing. Once done, you can follow the procedure:

Synthetic filling duvets can be washed at home either by hand or by washing machine. In a washing machine, keep at the gentle mode. Use detergent quantity approximately half of the regular usage amount. After washing spin at normal setting, making sure it is completely dried and aired before using again.

Duvets with feather or down filling are usually not washable and require dry cleaning. But, if wash care label specifies, they must be washed at gentle wash cycle, like synthetic Duvet Cleaning. Let them dry naturally and properly aired.

Important care instructions while washing a Duvet:

Water temperature must be taken care of while washing a duvet. Do not use too hot or too cold water for duvet cleaning. As a thumb rule, use Lukewarm water (temperature around 35 degrees Celsius). A mild detergent must be used unless the duvet is badly stained. For this, you can use stain removing detergent but avoid too much of it and rub on the stain.

While rinsing the duvet, repeat the rinse cycle once again to properly remove the detergent as they are bulky and fluffy and may retain some detergent and soapy water. Therefore, an extra rinse cycle should be enough to ensure it is completely clean and fresh.

Drying instructions:

After washing and drying a duvet, a feather duvet may appear darker in colour. Don’t be afraid as it is just due to damp feathers and it may look a bit discoloured. Therefore, it will return to its normal colour when completely dried.

The best way to dry a duvet is to use a dryer to completely extract water from it and then air dry. Though some people prefer line drying naturally, it may take a long time to dry completely. Feather duvets may start growing mildew and mould if it takes too long to dry and make them smell a little musty. The quicker they dry, the better it is. The best combination is to dry duvet in dryer and then air dry afterwards. So, now you have read a complete guide on the way you should wash the duvet.
