IDLING TO RULE THE GODS

BEGINNER'S PET GROWTH GUIDE

About This Guide:

This walkthrough is intended to give guidance on gaining Mouse Growth, as you are still attempting to reach, and defeat, Baal for the first time. The guide starts in Section I.  It is an attempt to help you chose when buying food is the right thing to do.  It is broken up to show the point at which buying food could be a good idea.  Section II will cover a little about late game Pets.  Section III  has a list of other resources available to view.  Credit given where due.
By no means is this guide an authority.  Just a showing of options on how to gain more Growth.

You may want something a little broader.  Covers more than just the Growth.  Done.  Behold Minercu's Pet Guide:
    http://www.kongregate.com/forums/2874-idling-to-rule-the-gods/topics/609227-pet-guide

Alternately, you may also decide that the Mouse is just not worth it.  If that is the case, it is still good to throw free food at it, and just accept that you will not use the Pet.  Then one day find yourself in need of a little bit more, and a fat Mouse can offer more than a skinny one.  True story.

I:      Just Got Your Mouse

     a)      Introduction

So now you have a mouse.  It watches you.  You think its hungry.  What to do....
The answer depends on what you want your pets to be when they turn 18 and leave the house.  These things are definitely long play content.  The longer you've had em, the more they help.  But even a couple weeks can give you a pet that can help push you over the next god in 5 minutes instead of 5 hours.  The only thing you gotta do is feed em.
Problem is, you don't know what to do.  You've come back to the game, and now it's hungry.  And that free food is junk.  Should you use God Power for food, or keep giving it the Free Food?  Well, the simple of it is, maybe.  If you want a powerhouse Mouse, I offer suggestions.

     b)     Feeding The Mouse

          i.     Unlocked The Mouse

At the start, after getting the Mouse, its tiny and weak.  Showing up at 3/4/5 on its growth stats is depressing.  Leveling it doesn't even make the multiplier worth using clones on, and it doesn't even award more Clone Count Maximum when your Mouse defeats your clones.  You gotta get those Growth stats up.  Every chance you get, you need to feed that Mouse.  Just use the Free Food at first.  It doesn't look like much, but it adds up after a week or two.
To get more out of the Free Food, you can wait longer for the Hunger to decrease.  At 3 hours (75%), you will gain .25 to each Growth Stat.  After 6 (50%), it will give .5 to each Growth Stat.  If you can hold off from rebirthing for 10 hours 48 minutes (10%), or more, it will actually give 1 full Growth stat.  Considering this, it may benefit you to wait, if you have the time to wait.

          ii.    Buying Food

So now, that moment of when to buy food.  It is tempting, bacon doing 6x more for your pet than dry crumbs.  Here's the simple of the choice.  You either want a big mouse, or you don't.  That's it.  Decide now.  If not, keep giving it crumbs and play away until Baal, and get your food with BP only, whenever you actually decide to fight P. Baals.
If you want a big mouse, the time to start considering the purchase of food is about when you get to 13 or so GP each run  (Luna).  When you get here, progress is already getting slow, but you've gotten your Creating Speed Bonus up, you're at (or near) your 99,999 clone max, and may even already be working on your Build Speed bonus (BS). It costs 10 GP for the 35% BS bonus purchase.  At 13 GP, you can buy 1 BS Bonus 35% and have enough left over for 1 piece of bacon.  A very neat position to be in.
Another great thing about choosing Luna, is you probably already know about Might by now, and maybe even wanna get some levels in it every now and then, to start making it good too.  You can choose to do 3 or 6 hour runs at this point, for feeding the mouse, getting BS upgrades, and earning Total Might, all while climbing closer to the next god.  If you aren't considering this, even remotely, then you can still have the option of feeding your pet.  Usually after waking up, or after appointments, like work or school.  The Luna rule can still offer a starting point.
But lets say you wanna do it sooner.  Fine.  At 11 GP (Zeus), you still have 1 GP left after buying your BS bonus.  You dont have to wait to spend.  There is a food that is worth 1 GP, and offers double what the Free Food offers, plus a chance to triple at 10% Hunger.  It is Puny Food.  At Nys, you can buy the Strong Food and everything will still be neat.
If you don't care about having everything all neat, but still want to show off your Mouse to your buddies, you can always start buying food earlier.  This will cut into your other GP purchases to a point that, I think all of us can agree, just isn't worth it.

Also, I should add, that since Growth is affected by time, the obvious choice for your pets is bacon.  Loving pet owners feed bacon.
If you want to share any thoughts on buying food with GP, come discuss on the forum post.  We can figure something out:

II:    Getting Growth Later

     a)      Introduction

Now its come time.  Baal is no longer your goal.  You either want to climb as high as you can, get your GP stats up, or do Challenges.  The choice is yours.  Here's what you can do to feed your pets in the meantime.

     b)      Pets Above Baal

If climbing P. Baals is your goal, then feeding your pets couldn't be easier.  You're gonna get BP when you defeat P Baals, which can be used to buy the food.  A much better option to most of us, than using our GP for it. And climbing into the P. Baals can take longer runs, so hunger comes on most any run.
You may run out of BP while climbing up, and wonder if GP is worth it.  IMO, yes.  You receive GP from all the gods you've defeated, plus more from Ultimate Being fights.  If you aren't quite ready to rebirth when you are out of BP, using GP isn't the end of the world.

     c)      Speedrunning Pets

You're getting plenty of GP, but never see a Hunger bar low enough to feed.  This isn't even a fair choice.  Just buy the food with GP when you walk away from the game long enough, you actually get below 75% Hunger on your pets.  No need to pinch that many pennies.

     d)      Pets In Challenges

Entering any of the 4 challenges doesn't mean you can't work on your pets.  But each Challenge should be approached differently.  And when you do the Challenge, in relation to your GP stats, can also affect when and what to feed.
Starting with the Ultimate Universe Challenge (UUC), we have lots of longer runs, back to back, while getting into the P Baals each run.  This is a good time for using BP.  In fact, it's just about the same as Pets Above Baal, but (depending on your GP stats), may cause longer runs than normal, causing you to run out of BP more.  But, being you need a level 5 Planet to start a UUC, you already know how long a Universe takes for you.  Don't fear using GP for food here, because that level 5 planet can actually give you more GP than you need to buy your food.  If you are really worried, just wait for the 10% feeding when using your BP, so you don't have to use as much GP (remember this though, the 10% feeding for bacon is not as good as the 6 or 3 hours)
During a Double Rebirth Challenge (DRC), you can follow the Luna rule.  But only if you are in fact taking long enough to have the option to feed your pet during a DRC.  Usually, this will only happen if you had to leave the game, or you are getting close to Baal again.  Pets may be more important to you than GP at this point as well.  That would make feeding your pets bacon an obvious choice.
In an Ultimate Baal Challenge, you have been stripped of so much, its gonna take longer than a DRC.  In fact, the Pet Multiplier doesnt count in a UBC either.  This is because alot of people have done alot of UBC's without pets, and it wouldn't be fair to them to allow pets now.  So now, you have to decide again, do you want big pets.  And whats more, you may even have a lot more mouths to feed.  Always feed when Hungry, even free food.  Buying food is a choice you alone have to make here.  If you want to get to Baal fast, ending the Challenge,  you may not want to stop to buy food outside of once or twice a day, if you get 10% Hunger.  If you came to get GP in a UBC, you should know that GP spent for food is lost, and will not be returned like GP used on Divinity and Clone purchases. That said, you may want to consider the 10% feed option too.  Feeding more often than only at 10% will definitely slow down your challenge, but can be a viable option for larger pets when you finish the challenge.
In an Ultimate Arty Challenge (UAC), unless you're buying GP with real money, just give em free food.  And also, what's wrong with you?
