It depends on how you set up your site. Whereas with the first option, the site is set up to help you succeed. This option is a little more guess work than most people would like. But if you set it up correctly, you could make money if you ask help from an expert on making money. My suggestion is to always try to spend the least amount of money you can and work your way up from there. If you put $50,000 down into a brand new site, with new design, coding, etc. And you fail? It's going to stink and not be good for you at all. However, if you try something like a free website, you didn't spend anything and you made money back. Even if you don't become the millionaire you always wanted to be, you probably will end up making more money than you had in your bank account before you started all this.

Free websites are not risky at all, and if you are just starting out, this is a great way for you to start up. If you want to spend money later on - fine. Be my guest!
