When most people think about AI, they imagine post-apocalyptic scenarios like you’d see in a Hollywood movie where artificial intelligence has overthrown humanity and turned them all into slaves. Even those who don’t fear that AI will bring about the end of humanity as we know it are still wary of the technology because of its capacity to take over certain jobs that are normally performed by humans. It’s only a matter of time before taxi, truck, bus, and Uber drivers are out of a job now that we’re close to fully autonomous vehicles that can navigate the roadways more safely than humans can. But AI isn’t all bad. In fact, it’s mostly good and it’s going to take civilization into a new age of discovery.
What about jobs?
Do you know any darkroom technicians? Probably not because the only ones left are working in museums. That’s because advances in digital photography has made film photography obsolete. Sure there are still photographers who choose to shoot with film but they develop their own film in a dark room and darkroom technicians are now a thing of the past. But humanity survived, and they will likewise survive the AI revolution when many jobs are displaced by artificially intelligent machines. They will survive because there will be many new jobs that arise as a result of such a revolution.
AI will solve the world’s problems
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in America, by analyzing the vast amounts of data we’ve collected about cancer, AI will probably find a cure for it within a few years. Accidents are the fourth leading cause of death in America. AI can greatly reduce the number of vehicular fatalities by taking over driving responsibilities.
