Small Living Room Decor Struggles | Make Your Living Room Look Bigger

A living room is a space which goes through every phase of your life. It is the place where you gather with your family or friends. A lot of times it might be the room where you spend most of your hours in. When you shift to a new house with a smaller space this fact can be a bit of a bummer. The art of utilizing a space and organising it in a way that makes it look homely and spacious is a tricky subject. Who does love a gorgeously styled room that is also insta worthy?

Don't let your space of your living room come between your own personal styles and look it doesn't matter how small or big the space is, as long as you know how to style it properly. Regardless of your interior style there are certain items that can be used that will make a living room pulled together. It's a little bit of science of nailing that perfectly placed and decorated feel, but we promise you it's easier than what it looks like!

Here are some tips and tricks that get you a living room you always desired

1. Embrace the white walls!

White walls can be drab, but they can still create a soothing atmosphere. Consider going for a white-on-white theme in your home. A simple and stylish way to make any small room seem lighter and larger is to pair white walls with pleasant furniture.

Add splashes of texture and flashes of colour for character. Mercedes Daczi used a variety of decorative and textural accents, such as houseplants and wicker furniture, to personalise this white living room.

2. Rug it; larger the better

On a couch, who doesn't like a comfortable cushion? In my view, the bigger the better, much like the rug. The trick to using throw pillows to tie your room together is to make sure they match. You don't like pillows that are symmetrical and matchy-matchy. Cushions with matching fabrics and colour schemes appeal to me. This will give the house a more lived-in, styled appearance rather than a show-home appearance.

Fabric will turn a crowded living space into a boho haven. Houseplant specialist Igor Josifovic dresses up a budget sofa in his small living room with a cotton tapestry and Kilim pillows in this style from Happy Interior Blog. The Turkish rug adds to the appeal of sitting on the board. A framed kitchen towel was too cute to use next to the woven wall hanging.

3. Get your creative caps on

It can be difficult to decorate an oddly shaped living room, but no space is ever too strange for beautiful decor. A strange wall can be transformed into a focal point. The owner of this apartment built a salon-style gallery wall out of the vertical space around her bedroom entrance.

Are you stumped as to where to put the sofa? In an unusually shaped room, wallpaper with a bold pattern will serve as a focal point. The living room is anchored by wallpaper and peonies.

4. Floral and plants

Plants, plants, plants! Florals and plants may make or break a room. Plants are a fantastic way to bring life and colour into your living room. Small plants are a great way to bring a pop of colour to every surface in your home. A great way to dress up a plain table. I always stock up on fresh florals where you can add still more colour and vibrancy to a space. Wherever or whenever possible, go with more seasonal flowers.

Place them on your coffee table and marvel at your accomplishments. This will give a trend and breezy feeling to your living room. Plants are one of the most beautiful ways to decorate a living room. Perennials with blooms, such as daffodils or tulips, add a splash of colour, while leafy beauties like ferns and spider plants add depth (and clean the air!). Do you despise gardening? Put a few low-maintenance succulents in chic DIY planters for a low-maintenance look.

5. Add artwork

Go huge with your artwork, much as you did with your rug. What is more unattractive than a large wall with a small image on it. You can spend as much money on art as you want. Desenio is one of my favourite places to get artwork, and they have a wide variety of designs and shapes to suit any budget. For a chic, seamless look, go as big as you can and have one standout piece or two parallel ones.

6. Turn your eyes away from the dormroom styles!

Okay we all are guilty for this one. Been there done that. Is your living room screaming adolescent? Home polish's tiny bachelor pad is brimming with advice for "adulting" an apartment.

The sleek bike shelf holds the pedals off the ground and transforms the bike into a decorative wall hanging. The revolving desk that covers the left side of the room is another good concept that doesn't waste floor space. It has a lot of room because of the built-in drawers. The different features and décor patterns that add a one-of-a-kind charm, from the vivid prints to the refined furniture, turn this 500-square-foot studio into a comfortable grown-up house.

7. Get a wider TV stand

Speaking of pet peeves.. Have you seen the living rooms which have a Large Tv but a small stand that is way too small to look proportional? Yup red alert. This can instantly make a room look messy and not complete because you’ve not measured properly. One of the number one things you can do is get a wider TV stand than your TV. Use a chest of drawers for your TV. Wide enough and plenty of storage for all our things. Measure twice, check once and have a fabulously pulled together room.

8. Hid it

Hidden storage is the new trend and we love it. Storage spaces that are seamless and camouflaging to your walls make a smart choice and save a lot of space without realizing it. To avoid clutter, choose furniture with built-in storage. As a coffee table, a suitcase or storage ottoman fits well. Instead of a gaming table, place a small chest of drawers or a small credenza around the room's perimeter to increase storage choices.

9. Mirrors and Wallpapers

If plain white is too monochromatic for you use wallpapers. There are several kinds with different textures colours. A small living space, particularly one with little windows, may feel confining. By papering a wall and hanging a mirror on top, you can provide a focal point, increase illumination, and add dimension all at once. It's much easier if you can position the mirror away from a curtain, as the mirror would reflect the view outside, creating the appearance of an extra window.

10. The layout of this?

A pair of matching side tables and lamps surround the love seat on the papered wall. A big woven ottoman may be used as a dining table or additional seating. In this setup, you could add an additional (small-scale) chair or two across from the love seat if space allows. Seats range from two to four.

11. Take advantage of your ceiling

Take advantage of the excess space in your tiny living room if it has high ceilings. Although pulling the eye upward does not help with fitting in an additional bench, it does help to create the appearance that your room is much bigger and grander than it would otherwise be. Create an eclectic art gallery in the vertical vacuum.

12. Fill up the corner

Sounds a little counterintuitive doesn't it? It might seem counterintuitive, but if you have a tiny corner living room, going for the biggest piece of furniture available will also make the space seem larger. What is the reason for this? A large sectional (like the one seen here) is spacious and can accommodate a lot of people, but it also makes the space feel uncluttered because it seems to be one piece. In a limited room, a modern sectional with smooth, straight lines fits better than an overstuffed version.
