Each *thoughtless* ill that we have done, O Agni, all error in our conduct, Jātavedas!

AVŚ 7.106

When one's food is pure, one's being become pure. When one's being become pure, one's *memory* becomes strong. When *memory* becomes
strong, all the knots are cut away.
ChUp 7.26.2

Is it this heart and this mind that were stated earlier. Is it awareness, perception, discernment, cognition, wisdom, insight, steadfastness, thinking,
reflection, drive, *memory*, intention, purpose, will, love? and such others.
All these verily are various designations of cognition.

Note: Memory is a somewhat proactive entity in the Vedic literature:

"Expectation surely is greater than memory. Kindled by expectation, memory recites the hymns, performs rites, desires sons and cattle, desires this world and the next."
āśā vāva smarādbhūyasyāśeddho vai smaro mantrānadhīte karmāṇi kurute putrāmśca paśūmścecchata imaṃ ca
lokamamuṃ cecchata āśāmupāssveti.
ChUPp. 7.14.1

Which goes well with the pericope "Paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā" - in which memory (mindfulness) is first "called" to stand by; and then somewhat "asked" to perform the act of retrieving the Teaching (or something else in other cases).

Note also that the AV(Ś) pericope Each *thoughtless* ill that we have done, denotes that "thoughtless" is kind of dependent on the fact that the person did not know, or was not bearing in mind, the teaching of the Veda. If he had had present in mind the Teaching, he would not have done ill.
