  • Episode Name:
    Let's Go Glamping!
  • Air date:
    8/22/2013
  • Summary:
The designers go on a luxury overnight camping trip, with campsite surroundings serving as style inspirations for a challenge. Allison Williams ("Girls") is the guest judge.

This episode kicks off with an epic battle between designers that results in one very volatile Russian storming off cursing, and screaming, and swatting at cameras as he strides into New York City traffic. Woah. But 36 hours earlier, the day begins with the usual banter in the apartments before the designers head to the workroom to find out about their next challenge. Helen Castillo is happy, happy, happy that she walked away with a win from the previous partner challenge; Jeremy Brandrick is sad, sad, sad after receiving word that is grandmother had died the evening before and he’d be unable to attend her funeral due to his Project Runway obligations. Our condolences Jeremy.

Upon arriving at Parsons, designers are greeted by Tim Gunn and … Jesse Tyler Ferguson from Modern Family! Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita founded Tie the Knot, an organization that features seasonal collections of bow ties for purchase with all proceeds going to various groups that fight for civil rights for gays and lesbians, particularly marriage equality. Designers were given the following challenge: Design a look inspired by the bow ties and incorporate bow ties into the look, but it’s not a menswear challenge (collective sigh of relief).

Tim’s consultations are even fairly low-key. He applauds Dom’s dress concept and encourages her to focus on the finishing details rather than rushing through a jacket to go with it. Bradon’s critique goes well, too, as Tim reviews the work Bradon has done with hand-piecing a top for his look. Kate’s critique is a breeze. When Tim suggests she reconsider the placement of the leather pieces she planned to add to the legs of her pants so they don’t make her model look shorter, she immediately comes up with an alternative treatment that reinforces the theme and brings in the leather in an interesting way. Yay Kate!
